36 Seinfeld’s Rare Use of “What’s The Deal”

Seinfeld's Rare Use of

Jerry Seinfeld’s association with the phrase “What’s the deal with…” actually came from a Saturday Night Live sketch parodying observational comedians. In reality, Seinfeld rarely used the phrase himself-saying it only four times across all 180 episodes of Seinfeld.

37. Whenever the final joke in a “Seinfeld” episode didn’t get enough laughs, the cast and crew would pitch new ideas on stage to ensure a strong ending.

38. Dexter’s Laboratory once produced an episode called Rude Removal, where Dexter and Dee Dee’s personalities split into “nice” and “rude” clones. The episode featured frequent swearing by the rude versions, which led to it never airing on TV-though it later became available to stream online.

39. After filming the pilot of The Office, John Krasinski returned to his job as a waiter, convinced the show wouldn’t go anywhere. “I was sure nothing was going to happen with it,” he later admitted.

45. In the Rugrats Chanukah episode, a background building sign in Hebrew reads “mohel,” meaning “covenant of circumcision,” with the cheeky tagline “cut rate.”

15 Most Controversial & Costly Blunders in History

47. In 2001, a viewer noticed that John Ritter’s testicles briefly slipped out of his shorts in a rerun of Three’s Company, nearly two decades after it first aired. Ritter laughed off the revelation, while Nickelodeon confirmed it with the line, “Yes, his scrotum falls out of his shorts.”

48. When guest-starring in the Family Guy episode Fighting Irish, Liam Neeson agreed to say anything the writers gave him-except one line. He refused to say, “I’ve been a world-famous tough guy since 56,” correcting it to reflect that he was only 55 when he filmed Taken.

  1. RE: Fact #21 (Captain Planet Tackles HIV-AIDS) – Okay, so I’ve got this awesome idea for a new superhero! He’ll have all these cool powers based on elements, but his only weakness will be whatever he ends up fighting.

    14
    • It’s especially weird since the other Planeteers have awesome ring powers like controlling elements, talking to animals, and messing with emotions, but they can’t use them when Captain Planet is around.

      18
  2. RE: Fact #38 (Unaired Dexter’s Laboratory Episode Online) – This whole story is way cooler than that. Even Wikipedia touches on some of it. For ages, people rumored this episode existed, making it kind of legendary. Folks on forums would chat about seeing it at conventions but also about how they’d get in huge legal trouble if anyone filmed it. A lot of people just figured it was all talk. Then, during Tartakovsky’s AMA on reddit, someone asked if it was real and if we could see it. To shock everyone, Tartakovsky confessed it was indeed real. Just admitting it existed was awesome, and then he said he’d try to share a copy, which got everyone super hyped. And wouldn’t you know it, he delivered, and the episode dropped online, making everyone super happy. Honestly though, if I could pick, I’d rather see the final episodes of Angry Beavers that never came out, except for a few audio snippets.
The final episode of Angry Beavers is pretty wild because it breaks the fourth wall, basically saying the beavers aren’t real, which apparently was a no-go for Nickelodeon back then. I think it also had some sharp comments about the show’s creators not getting paid residuals for their cartoons being re-aired.

    22
    • So, I heard Tartakovsky was saying he wanted to release it but wasn’t sure if it still existed. Then, one of the old animators from Dexter’s Lab mentioned finding it in his basement. Apparently, he ended up selling it to Adult Swim so they could put it on the air.

      7
  3. RE: Fact #4 (Star Trek’s Fermat’s Theorem Error) – I’d say, since it’s fiction and not real, they didn’t incorrectly state anything. It wasn’t solved for 700 years IN THEIR UNIVERSE.

    0
  4. RE: Fact #22 (OJ Simpson’s Prank Show ‘Juiced’) – Racism is definitely a thing in the justice system, sadly. And yeah, OJ totally murdered his wife.

    24
  5. RE: Fact #44 (Happy Days’ Iconic Water Ski Stunt) – Everyone at school was talking about this episode. It was considered “must-view television” and all the buzz was about Fonzie jumping the shark. We were so excited to watch it. But when I saw it, it was my first big letdown from high expectations in TV. I was absolutely disappointed. It would be a long time before the Game of Throne’s finale happened and made the disappointment of “Happy Days” feel a little less bad.

    14
  6. RE: Fact #30 (Seinfeld’s “No Hugging, No Learning” Rule) – The secret to making something amazing is to act like it’s not a big deal.

    12
  7. RE: Fact #23 (Family Guy Episode Faces Delays) – I always figured most of the people who work on Family Guy are Jewish, and that’s why they make so many jokes about Jewish people.

    11
  8. RE: Fact #46 (Lone Gunmen’s Eerie Premonition) – Columbine shooter Eric Harris had a similar idea back in 1999. He planned to target New York City, but not the Twin Towers specifically. Also, Tom Clancy wrote about a 747 crashing into the U.S. Capitol in his book Debt of Honor.

    26
  9. RE: Fact #31 (Real-Time Clock in Angry Beavers) – There’s a part in the second half of the first episode where Dag and Norb are trying to stay up all night. I don’t want to give away too much about this old Nick show, but it’s the only time the clock doesn’t show the right time, and it actually matters for the story.

    31
  10. RE: Fact #25 (Criticism of Louis CK’s “Lucky Louie”) – It’s wild how many people on the far right dislike things without ever actually checking them out or trying them. Remember the Iran deal not too long ago? Everyone on that side thought it was a terrible idea before they even knew what was in it.

It’s kind of like a kid saying they hate broccoli without ever tasting it.

I bet people on the left do the same thing, but I can’t think of any examples off the top of my head.

    7
    • When Mass Effect first came out, there was a big fuss about a sex scene. Some people protesting the game were saying it was basically a sex simulator with aliens.

I don’t recall exactly, but I think one of the women who was protesting actually watched the scene and was like, “Wait, that’s it?” She ended up changing her mind pretty quickly. So, good on her for not sticking to her guns just to avoid looking silly. It does make you think though, why do people get so worked up publicly about something they haven’t even experienced themselves?

      21
    • Bias is everywhere. I’m sure folks on the left have done similar things, but I can’t pull any specific examples right now.

For instance, tell someone on the left that a celebrity spoke out against Black Lives Matter, without saying how they criticized it.

Then, ask someone on the left who wants to ban assault rifles to explain what one actually is or how many rounds they’ve fired.

And if you’re talking to a Clinton supporter, ask them what they think of Trump’s policies, but frame it as if they were Clinton’s policies.

      22
  11. RE: Fact #46 (Lone Gunmen’s Eerie Premonition) – George Carlin, before 9/11, said something like, “How long before they start flying planes into our buildings and releasing anthrax bombs at our airports?”

    29
    • I’m happy the Kingsmen all died. The test to become a Kingsman requires them to betray their dogs, and if you’d betray your own dog, you’d probably betray anyone.

      16
      • So, the SS used that test to weed out recruits who had empathy, but the Kingsmen use it to make sure their recruits *do* have empathy. Plus, the gun wasn’t even loaded.

        4
  12. RE: Fact #14 (Snoop Dogg’s Short-Lived MTV Show) – Back when MTV was really trying hard to copy The Tom Green Show after Tom got cancer and left, they also had The Andy Dick Show around that time. That was another show that didn’t last long, focusing on the host.

You can find episodes of DFT on Youtube. Seriously, the theme song is awesome.

    23
  13. RE: Fact #40 (Extra Footage in UK Muppet Show) – Honestly, I don’t get why people still watch TV with all those commercials. Plus, they’re speeding up shows now to fit even more ads in.

    20
      • I feel the same way. It actually makes me appreciate paying the license fee, even with all the complaining we do. Over here, the break between commercials can seriously just be a replay of what just happened, with some filters, lens flares, whoosh noises, and a generic rock song thrown in. Or else it’s just “coming up next…” It’s like they’re making TV for people with dementia.

        9
  14. RE: Fact #46 (Lone Gunmen’s Eerie Premonition) – Hey, so in the game Deus Ex, which came out way back in 2000, you might notice the World Trade Center towers aren’t there in the New York missions. Back when they were making the game, the developers explained that they were destroyed by terrorists earlier in the game’s story.

    28
  15. RE: Fact #48 (Liam Neeson’s Script Alteration) – Are we sure that line wasn’t about the year ’56? Like, saying they’ve been a tough guy known worldwide since they were four?

    11
  16. RE: Fact #10 (The Dakotas Canceled Over Violence) – This reminds me of the fuss around Resistance: Fall of Man, which showed Manchester Cathedral with fighting in it. The Church of England wasn’t happy about that. They said it was copyright infringement and desecration, and also felt it was “inappropriate of Sony to let people shoot guns in a city that already has a gun problem.”

Just in case you’re not familiar, Resistance: Fall of Man is a game series from 2006 on the PS3 where aliens called Insects invade during the 20th century.

    12
  17. RE: Fact #18 (Controversial Episode of “The Cosby Show”) – There’s an episode of The Cosby Show where the guys get pregnant after Dr. Huxtable eats a submarine sandwich.

    16
  18. RE: Fact #39 (John Krasinski Waited Tables Post-Pilot) – From what I remember, there was about a six-month break between the pilot episode and the rest of the season. Plus, the show only got a six-episode order, which doesn’t exactly scream confidence. So, sticking with your day job sounds like a pretty sensible move.

    18
  19. RE: Fact #47 (John Ritter’s Wardrobe Malfunction) – From now on, when your balls accidentally pop out of your shorts, we’re calling it “Rittering.”

    33
  20. RE: Fact #28 (“Lost” Sesame Street Episode Resurfaces) – I really liked her episode of Mr. Rogers where she took off her makeup and costume to show kids that movies aren’t real.

    16
    • Yeah, I thought I remembered that differently too! My memory is that she shows up at Mr. Roger’s place not in costume, and then puts it on there.

      14
  21. RE: Fact #33 (Superman Gains Flight in 1940 Radio) – I think the original powerset was something like:

    * Leap tall buildings in a single bound
    * Could take a tank shell to the chest/bulletproof
    * More powerful than a locomotive

    But didn’t have:

    * Heat vision/X-ray vision/enhanced vision
    * Super breath
    * Super hearing
    * Flight

    24
  22. RE: Fact #31 (Real-Time Clock in Angry Beavers) – So, there was an early idea for the last episode where the beavers learn they’re cartoons that tons of kids watch. But apparently, Nickelodeon shut it down, saying they didn’t want cartoons to realize they’re cartoons.

    8
  23. RE: Fact #30 (Seinfeld’s “No Hugging, No Learning” Rule) – It seems like a lot of people miss that Seinfeld paved the way for a lot of what we see on TV today. The anti-heroes, the way it played with typical sitcom plots, and how it broke a lot of the unwritten rules of those shows – that’s all stuff we enjoy now because of Seinfeld. It’s kind of like saying “Citizen Kane is boring” or “The Beatles aren’t that good.”

    26
  24. RE: Fact #13 (Rob Lowe’s “Lyon’s Den” Finale) – That’s genuinely the weirdest way I’ve ever seen a cancelled show wrap up. And it seems like folks here forgot how Rob Lowe’s character spoke on Parks and Rec, because this is exactly how he sounded on that show.

    18
    • Yeah, I think this is even weirder, especially when you consider that back in 2004, Channel 5 in the UK bought the rights to air the series and showed all thirteen episodes, including those wild ones.

      12
  25. RE: Fact #32 (ThunderCats’ Staff Psychologist Ensures Morals) – Yeah, it really seems like they hired those people after the first episode. It’s a weird lesson, right? They’re all naked in space, but then suddenly they’re wearing clothes once they get to a planet. That whole episode always made me go “wtf.”

    28
    • Donald Leroy LaFontaine was born in Duluth, Minnesota, on August 26, 1940, and passed away in Los Angeles, California, on September 1, 2008, due to a pneumothorax. He was an American.

      15
  26. RE: Fact #8 (The Rock’s Star Trek Debut) – Hey, so the network, UPN, was doing some cross-promotion back then. They were airing both Voyager and WWF Smackdown at the time. Also, that specific episode had two awesome recurring Star Trek guest actors, Jeffrey Combs and JG Hertzler.

    18
  27. RE: Fact #17 (AMC’s Budget Cuts for “The Walking Dead”) – There is a really good breakdown of what went down with The Walking Dead series, by YMS out there.
Basically, Frank Darabont put together an awesome cast and crew to get the show sold to AMC. They gave him $3.4 million per episode for the first 6 episodes. But when it got renewed for a second season, AMC cut the budget to $2.75 million per episode, even though they ordered 13 episodes – 7 more than the first season. Then, they decided to fire Darabont because he wasn’t seeing eye-to-eye with the AMC execs and their relationship got rough. What’s wild is that even though they decided to fire him weeks before, they waited until after he promoted the show at Comicon 2011 to tell him. Afterward, they supposedly “pressured” the cast and crew to keep quiet about it all.

    16
  28. RE: Fact #26 (Video iPod Saves “The Office”) – I don’t think that one thing alone saved the show. The iPod video wasn’t a huge hit when it first came out. I know that specific episode was shown on a lot of US airlines back then, which probably helped more.

    29
    • I think NBC really believed in the show and were trying unique ways to get people to watch The Office. They likely experimented with different advertising strategies beyond the iPod campaign. I say “single-handedly” because if you check out the video, Rainn Wilson actually credits the iTunes charts directly, saying “We would have definitely been…the plug would have been pulled.” So, while some people might have started watching because they saw it on airplanes, it was the iTunes sales that really saved the show.

      9
  29. RE: Fact #37 (Seinfeld’s Live Audience Joke Revisions) – Has anyone else noticed how Jason Alexander’s portrayal of George changed a lot in the early seasons? It usually takes actors some time to find their rhythm, but by season three, George feels like a totally different character.

    23
    • Initially, he was acting like a Woody Allen character, but then he figured out that George was actually inspired by Larry David.

      18
    • It’s interesting how characters evolve on other shows too. Like in Community, you see Abed go from being a bit autistic to a genius who’s a little awkward. Troy changes from a dumb jock to a quirky nerd. And Britta, who starts out as Jeff’s moral compass, ends up being a bleeding-heart liberal who’s kind of an idiot. It’s always cool to rewatch the early seasons and see who the characters were originally compared to who the writers, actors, and fans made them over the years.

      17
      • Yeah, I kinda feel like Britta was just pulling the wool over our eyes for the first few episodes. After that, we got to see her for who she really is – a fake activist who’s pretty much as lazy and ordinary as the rest of us.

        10
  30. RE: Fact #11 (“Turn-On” Canceled Mid-Episode 1969) – Back in 1992, something similar happened with Australia’s Naughtiest Home Videos. They had to pull the plug on it during its first and only episode because the network president saw it and yelled at the studio to get that sh*t off the air.

    11
  31. RE: Fact #8 (The Rock’s Star Trek Debut) – Voyager really doesn’t get the credit it should. It’s honestly one of the best Star Trek series out there.

    18
    • TNG is always my top pick, then DS9, and then TOS. I like Voyager too, but it definitely doesn’t rank as high for me as those other three. It’s not that Voyager is bad, it’s just that the other shows are so good it’s tough for it to measure up.

      6
      • I actually liked DS9 a lot! TOS just felt too old for me, I could never really get into it.

How do you figure Voyager wasn’t as good? The production quality seemed just as high as TNG and DS9, and I thought the writing was too.

        9
  32. RE: Fact #32 (ThunderCats’ Staff Psychologist Ensures Morals) – I only ever picked up on the “kitty” puns related to Cheetara.

    26
  33. RE: Fact #40 (Extra Footage in UK Muppet Show) – Seriously, WTF UK? Fewer ads? How do you guys figure out what to buy, where to shop, or even what to think?!

    21
  34. RE: Fact #4 (Star Trek’s Fermat’s Theorem Error) – This is what really gets me thinking: Did this actually change history? Like, maybe it stayed a mystery for 700 years until a sci-fi show brought it up? It’s wild to imagine thousands of dedicated fans digging into this theorem and actually impacting the future. That’s what makes time travel so complicated!

    24
  35. RE: Fact #9 (Simpsons Corrects Judas Priest Genre) – When Kristen Schaal was on, they spelled her name wrong in the credits. Then on the next episode, Bart had to write “It’s Kirsten Schaal, not Kristen Schall” on the board.

    22
  36. RE: Fact #1 (Unique Seinfeld Theme for Episodes) – Just started rewatching Seinfeld after a long time, and it’s still so good! Totally worth checking out again. The widescreen version is a little weird though, feels a bit too zoomed in on some scenes, but overall it’s a pretty decent remaster compared to a lot of others out there.

    13
    • The laugh track really bugs me, something I didn’t notice when I first watched. For a show aiming to be “anti sitcom,” I feel like it could have skipped that, you know?

Also, those phones haven’t aged well. I heard Jason Alexander mention in an interview that if mobile phones were around back then, the show would have turned out totally different.

      11
  37. RE: Fact #24 (Korn’s Song Debuts on South Park) – I remember pre-ordering the PlayStation 1, and they gave me a demo disc with some unknown artists and then some game demos for when the system launched. Korn was one of the bands on there, with a demo track of “Blind” from their first album. I listened to it and was blown away by their sound; it was so different from anything else out then. I was a big fan for a few years, but after their third album, I started to lose interest, though they’ll always have a place on my CD shelf.

    20
  38. RE: Fact #2 (Nintendo Gifts Wii Consoles) – It’s cool that Dawkins seemed annoyed by how he was shown. I’m not really for or against religion, but he can be a bit too serious sometimes.

    34
  39. RE: Fact #29 (Final Destination’s X-Files Origins) – If you don’t take them too seriously, they’re actually pretty fun. I feel like the Final Destination sequels are more for horror fans to just have a good time with, you know?

    28
  40. RE: Fact #4 (Star Trek’s Fermat’s Theorem Error) – In the Star Trek universe, they had the Eugenics Wars in the 1990s that killed 30 million people, which is a major event. Our timeline didn’t have that.

    35
  41. RE: Fact #10 (The Dakotas Canceled Over Violence) – There’s a scene really similar to this in the movie Cool Hand Luke from 1967. Guess things changed fast.

    9
  42. RE: Fact #7 (Lassie’s Trademark Transfer) – So, I’ve got this awesome story about Lassie! Back in the day, Lassie and her trainer visited San Antonio and ended up in a car crash. My grandpa, who was a firefighter then, had to use the jaws of life to get them out. Lassie’s owner was so thankful and sent my grandparents tons of letters and cool stuff as a thank you. It was a pretty neat experience, and my grandpa even made it into the newspaper!

    13
  43. RE: Fact #43 (Unseen Archer as a Raptor) – My friend and I downloaded the first episode of Archer after seeing a bunch of posts about it online. We were pretty confused, like “WTF, why is it about a fu*king raptor?” We stopped watching after about 10 minutes. Now I get why…

    17
    • It must have looked totally wild when people asked if you’d seen the show, and you just said, “Yeah, it’s awful, that stupid raptor made no sense.”

      13
  44. RE: Fact #32 (ThunderCats’ Staff Psychologist Ensures Morals) – When I was seven, I broke my wrist trying to be Cheetara. I guess the main takeaway from that episode was to know your limits!

    18
  45. RE: Fact #30 (Seinfeld’s “No Hugging, No Learning” Rule) – My grandma got mentioned in an episode of Seinfeld! Turns out she was really good friends with Jerry’s mom for ages, first in Massapequa and then down in Florida. Jerry apparently used a lot of names from his life for the characters. There’s this episode, “The Pen,” where Jerry and Elaine are in Florida visiting his TV parents. His TV mom gets a call and says, “Oh, hi Gussie.” That was my grandma! I still think it’s so cool and have to bring it up whenever Seinfeld comes up.

    22
  46. RE: Fact #39 (John Krasinski Waited Tables Post-Pilot) – He told Greg Daniels, “I hope they don’t fu*k this up,” without even knowing who Greg Daniels was.

    17
  47. RE: Fact #5 (Game of Thrones Parody Influence) – That dialogue was top-notch! Lady Olenna’s lines, like “Oh no, please, seduce away it’s been so long. Although I rather think it’s all for naught. What happens when the non existent bumps against the decrepit?” and her follow-up “A question for the philosophers,” were especially memorable, especially with Varys’ reaction.

    25
  48. RE: Fact #44 (Happy Days’ Iconic Water Ski Stunt) – Just a heads-up, the show actually ran for 5 more seasons after this episode came out.

    23
  49. RE: Fact #13 (Rob Lowe’s “Lyon’s Den” Finale) – This is like that old DirecTV commercial, where Rob Lowe says he has DirecTV, and then another Rob Lowe shows up and says he has cable instead.

    10
  50. RE: Fact #3 (Trey Parker’s Ginger Prejudice) – Just wanted to add to that TIL: in that episode, a guy suggests marrying a Japanese woman to avoid the “ginger gene.” Funny enough, Trey Parker is married to a Japanese woman.

    3
      • Last year they got divorced, according to Wiki. I got a kick out of their daughter’s middle name, Boogie. Betty Boogie Parker sounds like it was auto-generated.

        16
  51. RE: Fact #5 (Game of Thrones Parody Influence) – Don’t listen to that person! They’re going to betray you! Hey!!! Stop those walks of betrayal in my garden!!!!

    17
  52. RE: Fact #29 (Final Destination’s X-Files Origins) – So, Jeffrey Reddick, who’s a screenwriter, wrote a script for The X-Files back in ’94 just to try and get an agent. He mentioned that he was flying back to Kentucky and read about a woman whose mom told her not to take a specific flight because she had a bad feeling. The woman switched flights, and the original one ended up crashing. Reddick thought that was super creepy and wondered what if she was meant to die on that flight. His script for The X-Files actually included Scully’s younger brother having a premonition about his flight crashing, and Mulder and Scully were going to investigate. Reddick never actually sent that script to The X-Files, but he reworked it into a movie. It’s kind of wild because James Wong and Glen Morgan, who worked on The X-Files, ended up being writers/director for it, and it became the movie Final Destination in 2000. Reddick later shared that script on the horror site Bloody Disgusting, and they put it on their website on June 16, 2015.

    24
  53. RE: Fact #6 (Price Is Right Perfect Guess) – Kneiss was super lucky on his last bid. He had all the prices for the games before the showcase showdown memorized, and he had a pretty good idea of the showcase’s price too. But for the last three digits, he just guessed using dates from his life. If his anniversary or his wife’s birthday had been different numbers, he would have gone over the price and lost.

    13
    • Pretty sure that’s the story he’s been going with. It’s completely made up. He had someone in the crowd who fed him the exact price. Kneiss had no clue.

    • There’s a lot of debate about this. One documentary claims a guy named Ted Slauson, a super-fan who knew all the prices on the show and went to many tapings, was sitting next to Mr. and Mrs. Kneiss and fed them answers all day because they were friendly. Slauson apparently knew the exact prices and didn’t need to guess. Mr. Kneiss denies Slauson helped him, but watching interviews with both of them, two things seem obvious: Slauson was incredibly prepared and knows TPiR prices by heart, and Mr. Kneiss doesn’t seem as dedicated a fan.

      12
      • First time hearing about this guy and his spot-on bid, but I’m not convinced he just got lucky with the last digits. It’s especially suspicious since he nailed the grill price by knowing exactly how much it costs.

        14
      • This is spot on. You can tell Kneiss was looking to the audience for answers during his time on stage, and he was getting them from Slauson. If Kneiss had known all the prices, he wouldn’t have had to. Honestly, the doc lays it all out pretty clearly.

        15
  54. RE: Fact #7 (Lassie’s Trademark Transfer) – That money could’ve gone to John Wayne! He apparently won Lassie in a poker game from the owner, Weatherwax, but never actually took her. He used to call him up sometimes and ask, “How’s my dog doing?”

    17
    • Honestly, I hope John Wayne wasn’t really the kind of guy to separate someone from their dog – maybe he was just messing around. That’s probably what really happened, but when I first saw your comment, I kind of thought John Wayne was a jerk who genuinely thought the dog was his. Working for Hollywood types hasn’t exactly improved my opinion of people in that industry.

      28
  55. RE: Fact #6 (Price Is Right Perfect Guess) – That guy Kneiss really got lucky on his final bid. He had all the prices memorized for the games before the showcase, and he had a good idea of the showcase’s price range. But for the last three digits, he just guessed based on dates from his life. If his anniversary or his wife’s birthday had been even a little different, he would have gone over the price and lost it all.

    14
    • This is a really debated topic, actually. There’s a documentary that says a guy named Ted Slauson was a super fan who knew all the prices on the show and went to a bunch of tapings. The documentary claims he sat next to Mr. and Mrs. Kneiss one day, they were nice to him, and he ended up feeding them answers throughout the whole show. Apparently, Slauson knew all the real prices, so he wasn’t just guessing.

Mr. Kneiss denies Slauson had anything to do with it. But if you watch interviews with both of them, two things stand out: Slauson was definitely obsessively prepared and knows an insane amount about The Price Is Right prices, and Mr. Kneiss seems like only a pretty casual fan at best.

      10
      • Honestly, this is the first I’m hearing about this guy and his perfect bid. I’m not convinced he just got lucky with the last digits, especially since he nailed the grill’s price by knowing its exact cost.

        16
      • This is right. You can see Kneiss looking to the audience for the answers during his time on stage, and Slauson was giving them to him. If Kneiss had known all the prices, he wouldn’t have needed to look. Honestly, the documentary pretty much proves it all.

        12
      • Yeah, the article has some other cool stuff too, like how Kniess first got into the game show.

It turns out, back then, there was another member of the Kniess family – their Maltese dog, Krystal. Sadly, Krystal got sick in 2008, and Terry and Linda had to make the heartbreaking choice to put her down.

Years later, when talking to a reporter from Esquire about Krystal, Terry got emotional. He said she was “such a special little dog” and could even walk backward.

The Kniesses were looking for something to focus on, a way to help them cope with their grief. They weren’t sure what, but they needed something. Then, one of Linda’s coworkers came back from California and wouldn’t stop raving about how much fun it was to be in the audience for The Price Is Right. Before they knew it, they had a new obsession.

And the article also mentions how his early career as a meteorologist is where he discovered his knack for spotting patterns everywhere. This skill apparently made his weather forecasts way more accurate and even helped him study old episodes of The Price Is Right.

Way before Terry’s big win on The Price Is Right, he was forecasting the weather on Vegas local news. He was trained as a meteorologist and became amazing at predicting future weather patterns. He started noticing patterns in everything.

  56. RE: Fact #19 (“Sesame Street” Addresses Post-9/11 Themes) – Yeah, that episode did a good job of showing how to deal with things.

    22
  57. RE: Fact #27 (Disney Cancels Star Wars Series) – So, there was this clip a few years back with 4-LOM and Zuckuss, the bounty hunters, and it was actually pretty funny. After Lucasfilm bought everything and that awful trailer came out, I figured there was no way this thing would ever get released. But that leaked clip made me think it really could have been something fans loved.

    11
  58. RE: Fact #29 (Final Destination’s X-Files Origins) – Those movies have made me hesitant to do a lot of things! Like flying, driving, going on rollercoasters, and even riding in elevators.

    15
  59. RE: Fact #11 (“Turn-On” Canceled Mid-Episode 1969) – I remember reading about this one a lot back in the 70s and 80s, it was often mentioned in TV trivia books. It felt like a fast-paced comedy similar to Laugh-In. I eventually caught some clips on YouTube later on and, while the editing was pretty wild, I remember thinking it was a bit too much and not all that funny.

I also remember watching Laugh-In reruns here in Australia during the 80s. It was interesting, but again, not really hilarious. I guess its humor, which was tied to the times, just didn’t age well.

Oh, and there was an Australian show called Australia’s Naughtiest Home Videos that got cut off halfway through its very first episode.

    13
  60. RE: Fact #3 (Trey Parker’s Ginger Prejudice) – Just wanted to add to this cool fact. There’s actually a line in that episode where a guy suggests marrying a Japanese woman to avoid the “ginger gene.” And get this, Trey Parker, one of the creators, is married to a Japanese woman.

    16
      • I don’t think Matt actually writes much on his own. Trey and Matt team up with a bunch of writers for episode ideas and plot outlines. Then, Trey takes all that and puts it into the script by himself. It’s probably just him being self-deprecating.

        4
  61. RE: Fact #13 (Rob Lowe’s “Lyon’s Den” Finale) – So basically, their show “Lyons Den” got canceled, but they still had to film the rest of the season for DVD sales. Rob Lowe and the writers were like, “Forget it, let’s go wild!” So they wrote his character as a total sociopath and mass murderer. In the very last scene, he stabs his rival, Kyle Chandler, with a steak knife during dinner, then finishes his meal and jumps off the balcony. That’s how the whole thing ended.

    16
    • I watched this show back when it was on TV, and now I have to see these banned, silly episodes. The whole series was pretty forgettable, even though it was supposed to be a legal drama with some mystery, kind of like a John Grisham book.

Fun fact: After this show flopped, Rob Lowe was offered other roles. He actually turned down a part in a medical drama on ABC, which ended up being “Grey’s Anatomy.” He almost played McDreamy! He passed on that to do a show called “Doc Vegas,” and the producers ended up firing an actress named Amy Adams. Not long after, Adams won an Oscar and became a huge movie star.

      17
  62. RE: Fact #5 (Game of Thrones Parody Influence) – That bit with Lady Olenna and Varys had some amazing dialogue. Lady Olenna saying, “Oh no, please, seduce away it’s been so long. Although I rather think it’s all for naught. What happens when the non existent bumps against the decrepit?” and then Varys looking down at his crotch, with her replying, “A question for the philosophers.” That was gold.

    20
  63. RE: Fact #50 (Clerks: Animated Show’s Confusing Airing) – Just grab the DVD and you’re good to go. I got mine when it first came out and still watch it all the time. It’s so good. I really wish they’d make more of them.

    17
      • I thought the PG rating was great and made it funnier. Given how much Kevin Smith usually swears and jokes about sex and drugs, this felt even funnier. ABC really put it in a weird spot in their schedule. They were still trying to sort out their good shows after TGIF ended.

        13
  64. RE: Fact #41 (Neil Patrick Harris’s Earnings Revealed) – He really had to step up his acting more than anyone else on that show. He had to pretend he was a total ladies’ man.

    25
  65. RE: Fact #22 (OJ Simpson’s Prank Show ‘Juiced’) – It’s true that racism has been and still is a problem in the justice system. Also, OJ definitely killed his wife.

    32
  66. RE: Fact #35 (South Park’s 200 “Shits” Episode) – And most of it was in that one song, “Shitty Shitty Bang Bang”.

    21
  67. RE: Fact #35 (South Park’s 200 “Shits” Episode) – Yeah, I get that. When stuff is so over-the-top, people don’t tend to get as offended. Like, Robocop originally got an NC-17, but they actually added *more* violence, which made it so ridiculous it wasn’t taken seriously.

    17
  68. RE: Fact #50 (Clerks: Animated Show’s Confusing Airing) – Fox did something similar with Firefly and aired the episodes out of order.

    22
    • It’s tough for a show to get going when they don’t even show the pilot and air the episodes they do show out of order, making it hard to follow.

      23
      • Every time I hear about a TV channel airing episodes of a show out of order, I can’t help but wonder if the people in charge there were drop kicked as babies.

        5
  69. RE: Fact #9 (Simpsons Corrects Judas Priest Genre) – It must be pretty nerve-wracking to mess up on The Simpsons. There are tons of people ready to jump all over any mistake you make.

    9
  70. RE: Fact #13 (Rob Lowe’s “Lyon’s Den” Finale) – That’s seriously the weirdest ending for a cancelled show I’ve ever heard. And apparently, nobody here saw Parks and Rec. That’s exactly how Lowe’s character spoke on that show.

    28
  71. RE: Fact #7 (Lassie’s Trademark Transfer) – So, the article says Lassie was a border collie, but that’s not right. Lassie was actually a rough collie.

    19
    • It’s still a bit strange to hear Lassie called a “he.” The character Lassie was a girl, and “lassie” itself means a girl! But the dogs who played her were all male. So, technically, you could call Lassie “he” or “she” and both would be correct.

      12
      • Growing up, I had a rough collie. My mom used to say that the male dogs generally have thicker, more impressive fur than the females. She thought that’s why the dog in the show looked so cute and fluffy. But she might have just been guessing!

        10
  72. RE: Fact #14 (Snoop Dogg’s Short-Lived MTV Show) – Back when MTV was trying hard to copy The Tom Green Show after he got sick and left. Around the same time, there was The Andy Dick Show too, another one of those personality-driven shows that didn’t last long. You can find episodes of DFT on YouTube, and that theme song is pretty awesome, I gotta say.

    16
  73. RE: Fact #12 (Homer Simpson’s Many Careers) – My Homer isn’t a Communist. He might be a liar, a pig, an idiot, or even a Communist, but he’s definitely not a porn star!

    29
  74. RE: Fact #21 (Captain Planet Tackles HIV-AIDS) – It’s a bummer that acceptance is being taught on an alien planet instead of here.

    12
  75. RE: Fact #7 (Lassie’s Trademark Transfer) – That’s a wild story! Imagine if John Wayne had actually collected on that poker win – he would’ve ended up with Lassie! He apparently used to call up the owner and ask, “How’s my dog doing?'”

    13
  76. RE: Fact #8 (The Rock’s Star Trek Debut) – So, the network, UPN, was doing some cross-promotion because they aired both Voyager and WWF Smackdown back then. Also, that particular episode had two awesome recurring Star Trek guest actors, Jeffrey Combs and JG Hertzler.

    2
  77. RE: Fact #13 (Rob Lowe’s “Lyon’s Den” Finale) – So, after “The West Wing,” I was on this show called “Lyons Den,” which was supposed to be a big deal. It was about a lawyer at a law firm, but the show didn’t do so well for a bunch of reasons. They canceled it, but they let us finish filming the rest of the season so they could sell it on DVD.

With the show already canceled and no one really going to see these last episodes, the writers and I figured, “Why not?” We decided to just go all out and burn some bridges. So, we wrote my character as this sociopathic maniac who was actually a mass murderer.

The ending was pretty wild. Kyle Chandler, who was playing a mentor and my rival, confronted me about the possibility that I was a mass murderer. I ended up stabbing him to death with my steak knife right there in the executive dining room. Then, I just sat back down, finished my steak, wiped my mouth, went out to the balcony, and jumped off. That was the end of the series.

    14
    • I actually caught this show when it was on TV. Now I have to check out these episodes that were banned. They’re supposedly pretty wild.

Honestly, the show itself was totally forgettable. It was supposed to be a legal drama with some mystery, like something by John Grisham.

Funnily enough, after this show bombed, Rob Lowe was offered other gigs. He actually turned down a role in a medical drama on ABC. That show turned out to be “Grey’s Anatomy,” so he almost played McDreamy! He passed on it to do a show called “Doc Vegas” instead. The producers of “Doc Vegas” ended up firing an actress named Amy Adams. Not long after, Adams won an Oscar and became a huge movie star.

      12
      • I remember watching the first couple of episodes and thinking it was kinda boring. I figured I’d give it another shot and binge-watch it later if I heard it got better.

Turns out, it did get really good! I need to track down that DVD now.

        14
  78. RE: Fact #22 (OJ Simpson’s Prank Show ‘Juiced’) – So, Quientin Reviews actually made a video about this. It sounds like OJ was just trying to make some quick cash off his fading fame, and ended up with this awkward, cringey mess of badly planned pranks.

    15
    • I’m happy the Kingsmen all died. The test to become a Kingsman makes them traitors to their dogs, and if you’d betray your own dog, you’d probably betray anyone.

  79. RE: Fact #16 (“Always Sunny” Meets “Game of Thrones”) – It was awesome how it turned out his Cantonese was just nonsense the whole time.

    33
  80. RE: Fact #4 (Star Trek’s Fermat’s Theorem Error) – Yeah, it seems like whatever knowledge there was got lost during World War III and the aftermath.

    11
  81. RE: Fact #3 (Trey Parker’s Ginger Prejudice) – I never had any issues at school for my red hair until that episode came out.

    10
    • I was picked on and bullied a lot for being strawberry blonde back in the late 70s through the early 90s. People were really prejudiced against gingers then.

It was super tough getting dates as a teenager because ginger guys were seen as gross. The only girls who’d even talk to me were, ironically, Black girls.

That’s pretty much how I ended up with my wife of 27 years – she’s Black. And with all that, fu*k Trey Parker. He brought back the hate towards gingers, and I’m not happy about it.

  82. RE: Fact #2 (Nintendo Gifts Wii Consoles) – The Allied Atheist Alliance has the ultimate answer to that big question, and we’re here for it!

    20
  83. RE: Fact #17 (AMC’s Budget Cuts for “The Walking Dead”) – This is a really good breakdown of what went down with The Walking Dead, by YMS.

Basically, Frank Darabont put together a fantastic team to pitch the show to AMC. They got $3.4 million per episode for the first season (6 episodes). But when it came to season two, AMC cut the budget to $2.75 million per episode even though they ordered 13 episodes – that’s 7 more than the first season! AMC also decided to let Darabont go because of disagreements and a rough relationship with them. What’s wild is that they decided to fire him weeks before, but they waited until *after* he promoted the show at Comicon 2011 to tell him. Then, they apparently ‘pressured’ the cast and crew to keep quiet about it all.

Lots of folks keep mentioning YMS’s review, so I wanted to give credit. His review of The Walking Dead is what actually inspired me to share this. I figured a post just saying “this awesome YouTube review of Walking Dead” might break the rules, so I found a real article to back it up. YMS does some amazing reviews, you should totally check out his review of The Walking Dead Seasons 1 & 2 and his other stuff.

  84. RE: Fact #15 (“Lilo & Stitch” Experiment Numbers) – There’s a big DeviantArt watermark on the image. It looks like some fan-made Lilo and Stitch wiki from factrepublic.

    30
  85. RE: Fact #2 (Nintendo Gifts Wii Consoles) – It’s pretty cool that Dawkins was annoyed by how he was portrayed. I’m not really for or against religion, but he seems to take himself way too seriously.

    15
    • I agree with Dawkins here. It’s important to distinguish real satire from just trying to shock people. That whole bit about him being into buggering a bald transvestite? Not satire, not witty at all. The part about wars between atheists, though – that’s actual satire and pretty clever. It’s like the difference between a good joke and just being crude. I also preferred watching The Simpsons.

This is actually a quote from Richard Dawkins during an AMA. He was asked about that specific episode. It seems like he was mostly annoyed because his depiction was low-effort, shock-value humor instead of actual satire. I get where he’s coming from. Honestly, I don’t see why some folks think South Park is smarter or better than Family Guy. It feels like South Park leans way more into random, gross-out, and shock humor.

      • Kids, this is your Grandpa Murphy.
But we have three grandpas already.
This one is the famous jazz musician.
        Ah, they all are.
Oh, oh-oh! You see, kids these days listen to rap music, which gives them brain damage. With the hippin’ and the hoppin’ and the bippin’ and the boppin’, they don’t know what jazz is about. Jazz is like Jello pudding… no, that’s not it. Jazz is like Kodak film… no, that’s not right either. I’ve got it, jazz is like the new Coke – it’ll be around forever.

        4
  86. RE: Fact #10 (The Dakotas Canceled Over Violence) – This reminds me of that controversy with the game Resistance: Fall of Man. It showed the Manchester Cathedral with combat scenes, which really upset the Church of England. They claimed copyright infringement and desecration, and also said it was inappropriate for Sony to let players shoot guns in a city that already has a gun problem.

Just so you know, Resistance: Fall of Man is a PlayStation 3 game series from 2006 about alien insects invading during the 20th century.

    14
  87. RE: Fact #16 (“Always Sunny” Meets “Game of Thrones”) – You know, that last spoiler might have been unnecessary; we all know which episode you’re talking about. Also, that story came from a really good book called ‘Flowers for Algernon’. I totally recommend it.

    5
  88. RE: Fact #6 (Price Is Right Perfect Guess) – You should check out “The Perfect Bid.” It’s a documentary about Ted Slauson. He was a huge fan of The Price Is Right, watching it all the time. He even created a huge list of all the prizes and their prices, going all the way back to the 80s. He mentioned he’d been watching since he was a kid in the 60s and would shout out the prices while in the audience.

Apparently, people started noticing how often contestants were winning big prizes after he’d been to a few shows and yelled out prices. He even sat next to Terry Kniess and his wife on the day Terry won, and Ted apparently explained his system to them. Ted said he helped Terry get to the Showcase Showdown. From what I recall, Ted mentally added up the prize values and gave the total to Terry’s wife, suggesting she tell Terry. She ended up shouting out the exact price, and Terry won. I totally believe Ted’s story after watching that.

    17
  89. RE: Fact #9 (Simpsons Corrects Judas Priest Genre) – When Kristen Schaal was on the show, they misspelled her name in the credits. In the next episode, Bart had to write “It’s Kirsten Schaal, not Kristen Schall” on the board.

    22
  90. RE: Fact #9 (Simpsons Corrects Judas Priest Genre) – If you’re not sure about the different types of metal music, check this out.

    22
  91. RE: Fact #19 (“Sesame Street” Addresses Post-9/11 Themes) – That episode about respecting cultural diversity sounds pretty good. It’s about Big Bird’s pen pal Gulliver visiting Sesame Street and being shocked that Big Bird is friends with non-birds. Big Bird ends up standing up for his friend Mr. Snuffleupagus when Gulliver won’t play with him. I think that’s a solid way to deal with that message.

    12
    • Pretty sure they made Mr. Snuffleupagus real at some point. I can totally see Big Bird telling someone to play with his imaginary friend.

      17
  92. RE: Fact #18 (Controversial Episode of “The Cosby Show”) – Here are the ingredients:

    Butter

    Molasses

    Worcestershire sauce

    Roofalin

    Chili powder

    Tomato sauce

    Quaaludes

    Butter

Let it simmer in a pan for 10 minutes, then serve right away for the fastest results.

    21
    • Yeah, I was wondering what happened to him too. His IMDB page says he hasn’t been on a TV show since 2007.

But I found out he actually retired from Hollywood and moved back to Louisville! Someone should totally try to get him to do an AMA on factrepublic, that would be so interesting.

      12
  93. RE: Fact #21 (Captain Planet Tackles HIV-AIDS) – Okay, I’ve got a super cool idea for a new superhero! He’ll have awesome powers based on different elements, but his only weakness will be whatever he’s up against.

    12
  94. RE: Fact #18 (Controversial Episode of “The Cosby Show”) – Here’s the video of the episode, and it even jumps right to the part I was talking about!

    5
    • That controlling vibe and the intense stare when he said those lines… he wasn’t just acting, you know? It felt like he was totally relishing his hidden, forbidden desires right there for everyone to see.

      6
      • The Cosby family was meant to show off the kind of smart, professional success that could inspire a generation of kids to do great things. Now, with everything that’s come out, it feels really messed up to think about the story centering on a guy who works from home as an OB-GYN, spending his days alone with young women, examining them under their clothes, while his wife goes out to be a lawyer.

        5
  95. RE: Fact #17 (AMC’s Budget Cuts for “The Walking Dead”) – And yet the Ricktatorship carried on, even with less money to buy stuff and things.

    14
    • I can totally picture how excited that organist must have been. Like, imagine chilling and reading the paper for two decades, and then finally, it’s your moment to steal the show!

      15
  96. RE: Fact #7 (Lassie’s Trademark Transfer) – That’s a pretty smart move. Lassie was on Nick at Nite when I was a kid, so obviously, a story about a dog and a boy getting into all sorts of adventures sounds awesome.

    11
    • Yeah, a story about a dog and a boy getting into all sorts of shenanigans sounds awesome! You should check out the 1975 movie, “A Boy and His Dog.”

      12
  97. RE: Fact #9 (Simpsons Corrects Judas Priest Genre) – It’s gotta be pretty scary to mess up on The Simpsons. So many people are just ready to call you out on it.

    11
      • In episode 2F09, the FBI agent said there’s only one sure way to get fugitives out of a foreign building: blast death metal. But then he played Judas Priest, which is obviously heavy metal. What are we supposed to believe, that it’s some kind of magic band? Ha ha, boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that mistake.

        8
  98. RE: Fact #5 (Game of Thrones Parody Influence) – South Park totally messed up the theme song for me. All I can think of now is floppy wiener.
