An Islamic religious authority blamed women who dress immodestly for causing earthquakes. In response, a blogger organized Boobquake, an event where 200,000 women wore immodest clothing in a light-hearted scientific experiment to produce an earthquake.

In Japan, women use the euphemism 'Sailor Moon is visiting' for when they're on their period. To capitalize on this, the creators of Sailor Moon released an officially-licensed range of character-themed menstrual pads.


7. On the night of May 27, 1991, a drugged, naked, bleeding boy of 14 was found on a Milwaukee street. When police arrived, they returned the boy to the control of Jeffery Dahmer, who almost immediately killed and dismembered the boy. 2 women who argued with the police were threatened with arrest.


8. A group of women called "The 9 Nanas" kept a secret for decades that not even their husbands knew about. For 30 years, they met at 4 am and anonymously paid bills and bought clothes for people in need. Each care package came with a homemade pound cake and a note that read "Somebody loves you."


9. Google paid a fine of $22.5 million for illegal data collection, $500 million for knowingly allowing fraudulent pharmacies to advertise on their site, and were accused of profiting from women sex trafficking by 38 different anti-trafficking organizations.


10. There is an episode of The Cosby Show, where after consuming Cosby's "special barbecue sauce", women stop fighting, become passive, and become more affectionate towards their lovers.

The Vlasic Pickle Stork mascot was an attempt to capitalize on pregnant women's craving for pickles.


12. In 1965, a patent was filed for a 'birthing apparatus' which would spin pregnant women around at as much as 7G until their baby was flung out from the centrifugal force.


13. The legend that Athens' first female physician dressed as a man to help women during childbirth. Male physicians accused her of seducing the women, leading to her appearing in court, where she revealed herself as a female and Athenian law was changed to allow female physicians.


14. When trains were introduced in the U.S, many people believed that that “women’s bodies were not designed to go at 50 miles an hour,” and that their “uteruses would fly out of their bodies if they were accelerated to that speed.”


15. In a Swedish study which studied 3500 women with breast implants and their cause of death, it was found that they were 3 times more likely to commit suicide when compared to the average Swedish population.

Torches of Freedom

To get women to smoke cigarettes in the 1920s, tobacco companies devised a campaign of equating cigarettes as "torches of freedom." The campaign helped women smoking jump from 5% in 1923 to 18.1% in 1935.


17. When non pregnant people are asked if they would have a termination if their fetus tested positive for down syndrome 23–33% said yes. When women who screened positive are asked, 89–97% said yes.


18. When the KGB tried to blackmail Indonesian President Achmed Sukarno with videotapes of the president having sex with Russian women disguised as flight attendants, Sukarno wasn't upset. He was pleased. He even asked for more copies of the video to show back in his country.

20. The wrestler Mick Foley became a fan of Tori Amos in 1993. After meeting her in 2008, he got involved in a group she started to aid abused women. He has volunteered extensively, fielding calls from women in difficult circumstances, and logged over 550 hours on the phone over an 18-month period.

Seann William Scott, who played Stifler in the American Pie films, was extremely shy and nervous around women and did not have a girlfriend until he was 30 years old.


22. Due to the lax laws that pertained to divorce in Reno, Nevada in the early 1900's, "divorce ranches" were created where women, who were denied divorces in their own home states, could stay at, establish residency, and gain a divorce in Reno within the span of six weeks.


23. Army Officer Hugh Thompson prevented the deaths of hundreds of Vietnamese civilians including women and children, by a group of American soldiers. Thompson, an Army helicopter pilot, landed between the soldiers and the villagers and threatened to open fire if they continued their attacks.


24. Jeannette Rankin, the first woman to be elected to Congress, voted in favor of the original House resolution that ultimately gave women the right to vote. She later noted that she was "the only woman who ever voted to give women the right to vote."


25. Chinese silent movie actress Ruan Lingyu committed suicide at age 24 partly due to the stress caused by the Shanghai gossip tabloids exposing her private life. Her funeral procession was 3 miles long and three women committed suicide during the event.
