RE: Fact #23 (Uma Thurman’s “Kill Bill” Accident) – Tarantino’s really piling up the bad decisions lately—smashing that priceless Martin guitar, and working with Weinstein after all that came out… Yikes.
RE: Fact #37 (Elizabeth Olsen’s Near Acting Departure) – I just learned Elizabeth Olsen was acting way back in 2004! Makes sense she’d be cautious about fame after what her sisters went through.
I just found out Elizabeth Olsen is the Olsen twins’ sister! Wow, talk about a late discovery. And seriously, those poor girls went through so much. All the harassment and people waiting for them to turn 18 was awful.
Man, the media back in the 90s and early 2000s was awful. It’s still bad now, but wow. The pressure to be super skinny was intense, and they were so mean to celebrities struggling with mental health and addiction.
I thought she was one of the twins at first. I was all, “Wait, they were still acting in 2004?”
RE: Fact #30 (Emma Watson’s Paparazzi Incident) – They were brutal. This client, back in the early 2010s, shows up at my old job – straight from some event, all dressed up – and our office was a total icebox. So she pulls a sweatshirt out of her bag and throws it on over her dress, and leaves like that. The next day, I’m not kidding, E! Online had an article making fun of her “outfit.” The woman was just freezing!
RE: Fact #18 (Shirley Temple’s Unbelievable Rumors) – Some are thinking, “Whoa, maybe she’s got a health problem,” but the Vatican’s like, “Peter, check if she’s an immortal witch!”
RE: Fact #31 (Paul Bettany’s 9/11 Proposal Inspiration) – That headline forgets to mention they also worked on *A Beautiful Mind* that year.
Jennifer, I’ve been trying to get a hold of you for two days. Since 9/11, I’ve been crazy about you – we should totally get married!
Jennifer Connelly: “Right.”
Totally! I had a huge crush on Jennifer Connelly, too. I bet tons of people did.
She’s just a year older, and started working when she was barely a teenager.
I’m a big fan of both *Labyrinth* and *Phenomena*—she made them around the same time, and they’re pretty different movies.
Labyrinth? Wow, so many eye-opening moments, and not all of them were about David Bowie.
RE: Fact #9 (Madge Bellamy’s Brief Marriage) – So, in her book, Bellamy said she was dirt poor after she retired. But, she actually owned some property and a shop she ran to get by.
Yeah, right. “Poor” shop owner with real estate.
She probably just used being poor as an excuse to have ham and eggs.
RE: Fact #43 (Jessica Simpson’s Edible Makeup Mishap) – This dude I knew, he kissed a girl who, get this, was totally covered in that edible body spray stuff. It burned his mouth something awful, and they both ended up in the ER because she broke out in a crazy rash. The early 2000s were insane.
The late 90s and early 2000s were wild! Watching “Dark Side of the 90s” made me realize how much I missed back then – I was pretty young, but high school was full of things that made me go, “Seriously, what was *that* all about?”
I was born in ’80 and got some lawn darts at a garage sale. My friend chucked one, and it nailed me in the leg.
RE: Fact #33 (Kate Winslet’s Underwater Record Triumph) – I didn’t know Kate Winslet was in Avatar 2! Saw it, and was totally surprised.
I saw it twice, and I have no idea who she was in the movie!
She was the water tribe’s spiritual leader.
RE: Fact #34 (Milla Jovovich’s Annulled Teenage Marriage) – Jovovich’s love life’s been pretty crazy, and not in a good way. She started modeling and acting super young, and admits to partying hard. She also dated a lot of older guys, and it was all pretty public back then—nobody really cared about age gaps. It wasn’t that long ago, either. Hopefully, that’s all there is to it, but it sounds like she might have been taken advantage of when she was younger.
RE: Fact #27 (Jennifer Lawrence’s Blue Bathtub Battle) – She stained the tub and her landlord’s on the hook for it? Seriously?
RE: Fact #37 (Elizabeth Olsen’s Near Acting Departure) – It’s kinda funny, this story’s from E!, a total parasite of a media company. “Almost quit because they wouldn’t stop harassing their family.”
I saw a video of Elizabeth talking to the paparazzi. One pap asked why she was so much nicer than her sisters, and she said it’s because she didn’t have to deal with them following her all the time.
Haha, good on her for shutting that down! What a terrible question.
RE: Fact #17 (Sarah Bernhardt’s Unique Apology) – I’d totally let someone do that umbrella thing if they bought me a house.
I’d do almost anything to get a house.
RE: Fact #29 (Jared Leto’s Rat Gift to Margot Robbie) – This is weird in a bad way.
This isn’t even the weirdest thing he’s done—I think he sent used condoms or something, too.
Totally Jared Leto.
RE: Fact #22 (Natalie Portman’s Academic Achievements) – Natalie, drinks and brawls? Is that what’s up?
She toked up daily, cheated on every exam, snorted coke constantly, and still got published in scientific journals.
RE: Fact #42 (Jessica Biel’s Arrow Destroys Camera) – Wasn’t that the movie where they had to CGI Wesley Snipes’ eyes open because he was being difficult?
RE: Fact #29 (Jared Leto’s Rat Gift to Margot Robbie) – He gave Will Smith a pig carcass and a bullet with his name on it, messed with the camera lenses, showed up to scenes he wasn’t in to goof around, and was a total pain in the neck on set.
He really went all out trying to be Heath Ledger.
RE: Fact #7 (Gillian Anderson’s Breakthrough Role) – Pam couldn’t play Agent Scully without it turning into a porn parody, no way.
RE: Fact #35 (Brie Larson’s Anime Look in Scott Pilgrim) – He probably told everyone to try not blinking so much.
RE: Fact #49 (Amy Adams Not a Disney Princess) – They’ve got the money.
RE: Fact #6 (Natasha Richardson’s Tragic Accident) – Head injuries are serious. Go to the ER right away if you or someone you care about:
* Passed out or got confused after the injury.
* Were hurt at high speed.
* Are throwing up or feel sick to your stomach.
* Are having trouble keeping your balance.
* Can’t remember what happened.
* Had a seizure.
* Are bleeding.
In the days after a head injury, get to the ER ASAP if:
* You have a really bad headache that won’t go away.
* You’re acting strange, your mood is all over the place, or you can’t focus.
* Your speech is slurred, or you’re having trouble reading or writing.
* You feel numb, dizzy, or weak.
* You’re having trouble sleeping.
* Your vision is changing, or you can’t move your eyes right.
* You have fluid leaking from your nose or ears.
When in doubt, head to the ER!
RE: Fact #36 (Carrie Fisher’s Affair Revelations to Ford) – He was 35, she was 19.
I had no idea he was that old for those films.
RE: Fact #10 (Jennifer Beals’ Iconic Sweatshirt) – Loved this movie as a kid! Saw it again recently… Yeah, not so much powerful acting anymore.
RE: Fact #49 (Amy Adams Not a Disney Princess) – Anna and Elsa were gonna be princesses, but those Frozen toys were such a hit they just kept them as separate characters.
Yeah, they were in the Ralph 2 scene—that movie’s the final word on it, right? It’s gotta be good for *something*.
RE: Fact #4 (Sean Young’s Catwoman Campaign) – She’s a real character. I saw her on The Joan Rivers Show once – she seemed totally out there.
I see what she was going for—a total ’60s Catwoman vibe. Looking at it that way, the awkward stuff makes more sense.
She totally missed the mark, though. Even if she’d done things right, Burton’s Catwoman and what Young brought to the table were just worlds apart. Pfeiffer was perfect—no one else could’ve done it better! But hey, if Burton wanted a cheesy, old-school Catwoman, Young might’ve actually worked.
Yeah, maybe she went about getting the job the wrong way, but hey, it’s kind of like what Elijah Wood did to get the role of Frodo.
She’d totally make a great Catwoman—being a little crazy might even help!
People forget how much crazier she was than James Woods when they were together. I see people all the time asking why she wasn’t more famous—this is why. You just never knew what to expect from her.
I doubt they ever actually dated. In ’89, James Woods sued her for harassment, saying she left a creepy doll at his place. She said it was just a case of unrequited love, and that he sued her out of spite. It all got settled out of court, and she got a nice chunk of change for her legal bills.
Great for that movie’s Catwoman, then.
If it had worked, everyone would be praising her for it, not making fun.
RE: Fact #39 (Blake Lively’s College Condition for Gossip Girl) – Blake Lively, after doing *The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants*, wanted a break from acting in 2007. Then she got the part of Serena van der Woodsen in *Gossip Girl* on The CW. She’d already put off college, and wanted to go, but they said she could do school part-time while filming. She played the part until 2012, and *Gossip Girl* really launched her career.
Ugh, I hate fake Dutch names! “Woodsen”? Seriously? It’s not a real Dutch word, place, or anything. I should know, I’m Dutch.
Yeah, that’s a totally perfect name for a bunch of fancy-pants rich people trying way too hard to be old money. Just slap some fancy-sounding foreign word onto your last name – boom, instant social upgrade.
I don’t know, does that sound like Gossip Girl? I’ve never seen it.
So, tons of names that seem fake are actually real now. Someone just tweaked the spelling, and that’s that. Like, there’s a hockey player, Justin Abdelkader—his family name used to be Abdul Qadir. The Roosevelts? They were the van Rosenvelts once upon a time. Or people just change how their names are said, like the Grandes or the Kelces. It’s just a thing that happens. It’s pretty American, I guess.
RE: Fact #40 (Michelle Pfeiffer’s Missed Batman Casting) – Sean Young, the original Catwoman, broke her arm falling off a horse! Then she tried to get the part in Batman Returns, even showing up in her own homemade costume. She did end up starring in Ace Ventura, though.
She had some problems with Harvey Weinstein that probably messed up her career. We can guess what those problems were.
When a Hollywood woman gets labeled “difficult,” I usually figure something shady was going on.
RE: Fact #24 (Jodie Foster’s “Taxi Driver” Experience) – Foster’s mom wanted pictures that showed her growing up, so she hired Emilio Lari to take some photos of her, partially nude. It was at a rented place in LA, with both moms there. People guess the pictures were taken sometime between 1975 and 1979, when Foster was a teenager.
RE: Fact #25 (Emma Stone’s Name Change Saga) – The SAG needs to be cautious here, or we’ll end up with actors named like racehorses.
I think names should get released when people pass away. Or, you could always do a Michael J. Fox and throw in a random letter.
So, like Topher Grace, just lop off half your first name.
But I don’t think names get free when someone dies. That’d be seriously weird, people would be grabbing the names of dead celebs all the time. We’d have a million Judy Garlands running around.
Edit: Just clearing things up for anyone confused. His real name is “ChrisTOPHER John Grace”.
His middle name’s Andrew, but he went with “J” instead of “A” because he wasn’t keen on using Michael, a Fox.
RE: Fact #41 (Jennifer Aniston Rejects SNL Role) – It worked out great for her.
RE: Fact #27 (Jennifer Lawrence’s Blue Bathtub Battle) – That’s a real bummer, but she should still have paid for the damage.
The studio should’ve handled that.
Haha, nope. It’s totally her fault. Same as if a mechanic gets grease on his own stuff at home – the garage isn’t paying for that.
RE: Fact #36 (Carrie Fisher’s Affair Revelations to Ford) – So, she told Harrison he could leave out anything he didn’t like, but he just didn’t say anything and let her publish whatever—right?
He’s a bit of a cold fish, not very approachable, and pretty quiet. Figured he’d be like that.
RE: Fact #44 (Cobie Smulders Battles Cancer During Filming) – She’s awesome! I’ve worked with her, and she’s great.
RE: Fact #26 (Orangutan Prefer Redheads Nicole Kidman) – Do redheads dig orangutans?
RE: Fact #50 (Jodie Foster’s Lion Attack Experience) – The more I find out about Foster’s childhood, the more normal she seems, which is kinda surprising. She’s totally earned a crazy phase, like a lot of Disney Channel stars go through.
RE: Fact #1 (Tami_Stronach Faces Marriage Proposals) – If I remember correctly, Natalie Portman’s first fan mail was from a guy who wrote about wanting to sexually assault her.
RE: Fact #19 (Lynn Cartwright Doubles for Geena Davis) – So you’re talking about the end, right? When you’re totally bawling your eyes out during the closing credits of This Used To Be My Playground?
RE: Fact #49 (Amy Adams Not a Disney Princess) – They were going to make it an R-rated spoof, but Disney chickened out and made it a typical PG Disney flick.
RE: Fact #34 (Milla Jovovich’s Annulled Teenage Marriage) – Shawn Andrews was meant to be a bigger deal in the movie, but his on-set antics got his part seriously cut down—lots of his scenes went to Matthew McConaughey. That decision was pretty cool, though.
He kept arguing with Pink—not smart to feud with the star.
The book, Alright, Alright, Alright, says he really annoyed everyone. Plus, the cast was totally sick of hearing about him and Milla constantly going at it.
So, Andrew’s the guy whose early keg delivery messed up the party.
He and she were both really hard to work with on set.
Everyone loathed her, and they cut most of her scenes. She was this pretentious little director and teen model—her mom was pushing her to be the next Brooke Shields, while everyone else in the cast was a nobody.
RE: Fact #5 (Linda Fiorentino’s FBI Scandal) – I think I remember hearing she wasn’t a barrel of laughs on the Dogma set.
RE: Fact #48 (Jennifer Connelly’s Chimpanzee Incident) – I saw a chimp attack at the circus when I was little. It was terrifying. July 7th, 1990, in Southeast Portland – two chimps went crazy, attacked their trainer, and grabbed a kid. Chimps seriously creep me out.
RE: Fact #24 (Jodie Foster’s “Taxi Driver” Experience) – Cut! Okay, next up – the groping and the ass slap! Jodie, take five, and tell Connie to get her butt out here. Thanks.
RE: Fact #31 (Paul Bettany’s 9/11 Proposal Inspiration) – I thought my childhood crush was way younger than her, but I looked it up and she’s from ’70, he’s from ’71. She was fifteen in Labyrinth, and he was a teen when he saw it too.
RE: Fact #4 (Sean Young’s Catwoman Campaign) – George Lazenby blew his last bucks on a sharp suit and a swanky watch, barged into Albert R. Broccoli’s office during his audition, and landed the Bond gig. That didn’t quite go the same way for Sean Young.
RE: Fact #32 (Natalie Portman’s Recasting in Romeo + Juliet) – That’s a great reason to get a rewrite.
RE: Fact #31 (Paul Bettany’s 9/11 Proposal Inspiration) – Wow, I had no idea they were married!
It kinda stopped the stalking.
RE: Fact #24 (Jodie Foster’s “Taxi Driver” Experience) – Natalie Portman’s here!
I was just about to say that! Sometimes I randomly think about how *Leon: The Professional* even got made.
Oh, Brooke Shields! Don’t even get me started.
Luc Besson even wanted them to hook up in the movie. What a creep.
That movie has its issues, but it’s awesome.
RE: Fact #2 (Val Kilmer’s Aggressive Audition Incident) – She quit the business, and says acting jobs vanished fast after she signed that deal. They probably called her “difficult” – just like Harvey Weinstein did to other actresses who said no.
Before her Doors audition, she’d been in a few TV shows, and some small parts in Woody Allen films – that’s pretty much it. The payout and the NDA support her version of events, naturally.
My aunt was in a scary movie called *He Knows You’re Alone*, which was Tom Hanks’ first film! She also had a couple of seasons on *Tales of the Gold Monkey* – way underrated, if you ask me. She did some other stuff, like *The Charmings*, which was probably just a job. There was a cool Norman Lear sitcom she was in, but it only lasted one season. I just found out she was in a pilot directed by George Miller that never aired. She got blackballed for a while after that, but she did have a small role in *The Emperor’s Club* with Kevin Kline – I think they dated back when they were at Juilliard.
Acting’s tough, you know? Lots of reasons why.
I mostly remember her from “Tales of the Gold Monkey.” It was a short-lived Indiana Jones knock-off, but I was hooked.
Funny enough, Kilmer had a reputation for being a tough collaborator.
It was probably both things. He was a jerk for punching her, but it’s understandable she couldn’t focus on her work after that. Imagine starting a new job and getting punched – how could you possibly do your job properly afterwards? Unless you’re a fighter or in the army, of course.
He was a tough nut to crack, and that hasn’t changed, just the job.
Yeah, sadly, she’s not alone. Lots of women have been through that, their careers ruined by powerful guys.
RE: Fact #39 (Blake Lively’s College Condition for Gossip Girl) – I had to say no to a job with amazing benefits and a serious pay raise, but the catch was a 90-minute commute five days a week. They said the commute would get shorter once I settled in, but wouldn’t put that in writing. They came back months later, still refusing to put it in writing. Finally, they admitted the job would mostly be in the office.
My partner just went through this, it was rough. Her boss said she needed to be in the office most of the time, so she figured two work-from-home days would be fine. Nope. She ended up quitting after a couple of months.
My husband got a job in Hawaii, but it turned into a nightmare. They canned him because he wouldn’t work more than 80 hours a week for free.
RE: Fact #50 (Jodie Foster’s Lion Attack Experience) – I’m not a huge movie buff, but I’m surprised she kept acting after all that. I would’ve needed a super long break; the whole Lions thing, and everything else, sounds like it would’ve made me quit the business.
She was a child actor… I wonder how much say she really had in acting, before or after what happened.
I’m a little confused about that part – were her parents pressuring her to keep going? If I were her, once I turned eighteen, I’d have totally quit and taken a super long break. I’d still really want to get away from all that.
After that, I would’ve totally bailed on that whole industry and needed serious therapy. Jodie’s tough though, really smart and resilient.
RE: Fact #4 (Sean Young’s Catwoman Campaign) – Back in the 70s, Grandma made my brother and me Batman and Robin costumes for Christmas. She was really good at sewing. Problem was, she based them on the old black and white TV show, so our costumes were black and white too. But hey, most people had black and white TVs then, so it wasn’t a big deal.
That’s awesome!
RE: Fact #34 (Milla Jovovich’s Annulled Teenage Marriage) – She married that director from *The Fifth Element*, who was a total creep, already married to that famous opera-singing alien lady. It looks like she gets taken advantage of by older guys, or anyone with a lot more power than her.
Yeah, and the alien singer was just seventeen when she had Besson’s baby.
RE: Fact #1 (Tami_Stronach Faces Marriage Proposals) – The Olsen twins had the same problems – creepy guys always bothering them. And the Emma Watson fact is even crazier. Seriously a bunch of weirdos.
That still seems wrong to me, maybe even criminal.
I think it’s a legal loophole, and lots of places started passing laws about it.
The UK just made it illegal. Before, it was kinda a grey area legally – you could maybe argue it sometimes, but not always. Now it’s crystal clear.
RE: Fact #23 (Uma Thurman’s “Kill Bill” Accident) – It’s a shame what happened to Uma Thurman, even though she’s forgiven Tarantino.
RE: Fact #9 (Madge Bellamy’s Brief Marriage) – What kinda food would she think is fancy? Just beef?
Ham and eggs were dirt cheap back then, same with salmon. Salmon was practically working-class food.
RE: Fact #15 (Ingrid Bergman Banned by Senator) – That fact’s totally misleading! Bergman had already left the country. She had an affair with an Italian director after getting bored with Hollywood’s superficial side—she craved something more authentic. Seeing *Rome, Open City* made her want to work on more real films.
RE: Fact #5 (Linda Fiorentino’s FBI Scandal) – Rosini was a really important guy in the FBI, working with the CIA to find Bin Laden, before and after 9/11. That’s why Fiorentino’s last movie role was a straight-to-DVD thing in 2009.
Wasn’t she a real handful on the first Men in Black, so they ditched her for the sequel?
I figured Kevin Smith wasn’t exactly a fan after *Dogma*. His Wikipedia page shows he said some pretty harsh things back then, but it looks like they made up after his heart attack. And, apparently, Tommy Lee Jones also had a problem with her — the gossip rags said he flat-out refused to work with her on *Men in Black II*. He probably thought she was a clown.
She was going to be the new partner.
The producers figured people were hooked on Jones.
Jones said she’d return only if Fiorentino wasn’t around.
Most of her movies are pretty forgettable, except for a few good ones.
RE: Fact #35 (Brie Larson’s Anime Look in Scott Pilgrim) – The other actors were told to blink differently too. Alison Pill only blinks once, for example.
RE: Fact #26 (Orangutan Prefer Redheads Nicole Kidman) – I’d sleep like a baby if I knew primates were into my pics.
RE: Fact #6 (Natasha Richardson’s Tragic Accident) – That story really got to me. I’ve always worn a helmet skiing ever since. And honestly, it’s way warmer and more comfortable in the cold than going bareheaded.
Helmet use really shot up after that, it was amazing!
I can’t believe people still ski without helmets! It’s just like not wearing a seatbelt—what’s the big deal?
I hardly ever see anyone under 50 skiing without a helmet these days. Maybe late spring, when it’s warm and sunny, and people are done with backcountry skiing, but even then, most still wear them.
RE: Fact #13 (Tragic End for Yvette Vickers) – Lonely deaths are so common in Japan, they even have a word for it: kodokushi.
That reminds me of that story about them checking on their really old folks – a lot of them were gone. Turns out, some of those addresses weren’t even real anymore; the houses were just…gone, replaced by a park or something.
RE: Fact #44 (Cobie Smulders Battles Cancer During Filming) – That’s one tough woman! Hope she’s okay.
RE: Fact #18 (Shirley Temple’s Unbelievable Rumors) – So, anyone else totally baffled by the Vatican’s involvement? A long time ago, they were often asked to settle disputes because they were seen as neutral.
Kind of like a Jedi, then.
That totally sounds like the Jedi, right? A religious group acting as mediators?
Way back when, the Vatican was often the go-to neutral party for settling disputes.
If only we’d known that back when we were fighting over that dress!
RE: Fact #21 (Cate Blanchett’s Historic Oscar Win) – Before Robert Downey Jr. in *Tropic Thunder*, it was all about “dude playing a dude disguised as another dude.”
RE: Fact #7 (Gillian Anderson’s Breakthrough Role) – That would’ve been a flop.
That would have totally wrecked the show! Weird choice, Pam, right?
Let me tell you two big reasons…
They wanted to cast a really hot celebrity at the time. Baywatch was super popular, and Pam was the biggest star. Getting her for the new show would mean great ratings right away. Plus, she had a great figure.
Pauli Shore’s Mulder, Bobcat Goldthwait’s Cancer Man.
RE: Fact #37 (Elizabeth Olsen’s Near Acting Departure) – I used to see one of them walking her dog near me in the mornings back in 2004. I still don’t know which sister it was, but she’d give me that “dog-person” smile, and I always wanted to stop and chat, you know, like dog people do. But she always had this huge bodyguard with her – seriously, the guy was a giant! He looked like he’d squash me like a bug if I tried to talk to her. I bet I’d have been married to one of them – and probably divorced by now – if it weren’t for him.
That last sentence was hilarious! Thanks for the chuckle.
Only thing stopping those guys from hitting on the ladies is a bunch of really well-paid bodyguards.
RE: Fact #35 (Brie Larson’s Anime Look in Scott Pilgrim) – I really dug Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, but their debut album totally blew their soundtrack out of the water.
RE: Fact #11 (Katie Holmes ) – Honestly, it’s not the dumbest thing she’s ever pulled.
Tom was his name.
RE: Fact #13 (Tragic End for Yvette Vickers) – Everyone eventually dies, it’s a solo journey.
She had a long, amazing life, way more experiences than most people. So, maybe we shouldn’t feel too sorry for her. Plus, Yvette’s a great name.
RE: Fact #23 (Uma Thurman’s “Kill Bill” Accident) – Thurman asked for the video, but they wouldn’t give it to him for fifteen years! Then, in 2018, Tarantino finally coughed it up. “It’s too late now, my neck and knees are toast!” he said.
He made $12M per Kill Bill episode, by the way.
The worst thing was keeping the footage secret, even though Tarantino says it wasn’t him, but Weinstein and Miramax. He said Uma thought he’d gone along with them not showing her the footage, but he didn’t know she thought that, even though he knew they weren’t letting her see it.
Typical Tarantino, I guess. Love his films, but the guy’s a real jerk.
She doesn’t think Tarantino’s to blame; he wasn’t the one sitting on the footage for fifteen years. She thought what happened was really messed up, almost criminal, but she didn’t think Tarantino meant to do anything bad. He even felt terrible about it and gave her the footage years later so she could share it. She’s actually proud of him for that. But she’s really angry at Weinstein and the other producers—they’re the ones who lied, hid the evidence, and are still lying about it. They totally meant to do harm, and they should be ashamed of themselves.
RE: Fact #9 (Madge Bellamy’s Brief Marriage) – Seriously, she got engaged without ever having breakfast with him?
Totally!
My grandparents got engaged after three chaperoned dates in the 1930s in Canada.
He couldn’t marry her until he turned 21 because his dad was a real jerk, so he waited until midnight on his birthday in 1939 and mailed her his proposal and ring from the U.K., where he was a radar tech during WWII. The letter went to the wrong house, but the neighbor gave it to my grandma in her parents’ yard. She wrote back, wearing the ring on a chain until she got his reply.
He got three leaves during the war—the first was for their wedding. My grandma got pregnant every time he came home. They had six kids, sixteen grandkids, and lived happily ever after until he died at 89. She passed a year later—we say she died of a broken heart.
Remember, women didn’t get the vote in Canada until 1918 (1920 in the US). In the U.K., women over 30 could vote in 1918, but not until 1928 for those 21 and over.
Women weren’t even legally considered “persons” in Canada until 1929, the U.K. in 1928, and the US still hasn’t achieved full gender equality.
In the 1920s, a starlet couldn’t even have breakfast with her fiancé before marriage without ruining her career—it was a huge scandal.
We’re so used to gender equality now, but legally, it’s super recent—only the last three generations—and it’s still not perfect.
Back in the 1920s, even famous actresses couldn’t have breakfast with their fiancés before the wedding.
My family history tells a different story though! 😉
And anyway, Hollywood stars in the 20s were definitely sleeping around — just like everyone else. They just kept it quiet.
Back in the 1920s, having breakfast alone with a guy wouldn’t have been a huge scandal that wrecked someone’s career. Women performers were pretty independent, and lots of them had lots of lovers. Newspapers even talked openly about how sexy and mischievous they were.
It wasn’t like there weren’t people criticizing them, but it was usually aimed at the whole acting profession. You really had to do something seriously scandalous to get blacklisted. Just being an actress was already considered more shocking than a simple date.
RE: Fact #16 (Tilda Swinton’s Noble Heritage) – Check out her clan’s page. Seeing “In 1567” at the start of the “Modern history” section? That’s one old clan!
Edit: Apparently, her great-great-great-grandfather got the land in the original charter from his cousin. That cousin probably got it for helping fight Macbeth – *the* Macbeth.
Wow, that was a surprising story! The guy who started the Quakers and helped invent TV—what a crazy family history.
RE: Fact #44 (Cobie Smulders Battles Cancer During Filming) – I’m wondering if that’s why the season ended with him saying she wasn’t a mother because she couldn’t have kids.
Even though doctors said she couldn’t have kids naturally, Cobie Smulders went on to have a daughter, Shaelyn, and then another son with her husband, Taran Killam.
RE: Fact #47 (Catherine Zeta-Jones Chooses Velma Role) – Seriously, she was the best! The whole cast was great, but she totally stole the show.
Renee was amazing as Roxy! That puppet scene was awesome.
They both went for the gun.
I’d never seen the whole thing before, and wow, it was incredible! I’m not usually into musicals, but I really appreciate talented people.
She was five months pregnant while they were filming! What a legend.
She was totally perfect as Velma, way better than anyone else.
RE: Fact #48 (Jennifer Connelly’s Chimpanzee Incident) – Way back when, in that “Career Opportunities” thing, nobody even seemed to notice her hands.
RE: Fact #10 (Jennifer Beals’ Iconic Sweatshirt) – When I was eleven, I chopped the necks off all my sweatshirts, and my mom was furious.
My mom got me those turtleneck sweaters when I was in middle school – for the first time ever! I snipped the necks right off with some really blunt scissors. She was furious.
RE: Fact #50 (Jodie Foster’s Lion Attack Experience) – That lion almost really hurt Bob Denver on Gilligan’s Island, in the episode “Feed the Kitty.” Seriously, don’t push your luck!
Just grab the cheapest lion tamer you can find on Craigslist.
RE: Fact #46 (Katy Perry’s Club Entry Trick) – They seem like they’re from the same factory, maybe just a couple of years apart.
But one of them’s way more fun, and can actually sing!
RE: Fact #24 (Jodie Foster’s “Taxi Driver” Experience) – Her parents could’ve used some mental health help.
The parents from the Korean film *Silenced* are gone.
RE: Fact #46 (Katy Perry’s Club Entry Trick) – Security probably just shrugged and let her in—they’re not there to turn away attractive women.
My job at a Vegas nightclub? I’d cruise the casino, find groups of women, and offer ’em free bubbly at our VIP tables. It wasn’t a hard sell. Then, we’d seat them near a group of guys already spending big on bottle service. Almost always, the groups mingled, the women drank the guys’ drinks, and the guys ended up dropping two or three times as much cash by the end of the night. More pretty women meant more money for the club.
