  1. If you smell the odorant in natural gas outside and you know that there is a gas main present, be prepared to fight the Energy company responsible who is for maintaining that line. They will fight tooth and nail to not have to fix a leak!!! They will break out their $$$ $5000+ gas sniffer devices to detect the location of the leak. If the amount per billion is not enough they will let the leak sit! The issue with this NO ONE KNOWS what the soil conditions around a pipe are. In situation the soil was a clay, sand, and extremely high water table. This was the perfect concealment for natural gas. Worse gas companies do not have to fix leaks right away. They have a rating scale. They also in 90% of their records of gas mapping are inaccurate. The original installers were illiterate and or could not even draw simple pictures. This where then transferred into digital mapping systems. Those where given 25’ of fudge factor per service and mains where given 50’ of fudge factor per X amount of some hundred feet of main draw’n. Current installers don’t even take the time to update the records which they are supposed to do on site. The operant is heavier than the gas, so it will stay in soils. But once the soil is broken it will release into the air and will take time to build back up, if soil conditions are right if you have a soil condition that can conceal a gas leak. Be on your gas company if you ever smell gas! Other words you are siting on a boom.
