35 Disgusting Insider Industrial Secrets You Should Know About

31Mobile Games

Mobile Games

Mobile video games are purposefully designed to be frustrating instead of fun. Most mobile games are put together with the intention of nurturing habitual behavior, frustrating a user, and then offering a slightly more enjoyable experience after money has been spent. This tactic has proven to be a more profitable model than actually offering entertainment, to the point where some companies take very careful steps to ensure that their games don't accidentally end up being fun.

32Candy

Candy

Not only are Sour Patch Kids from the same manufacturer as Swedish Fish, but they're the exact same candy except for the sour sugar that dusts Sour Patch Kids.

33Theater Popcorn

Theater Popcorn

Movie theater "butter" mixed with popcorn is actually just coconut oil or canola oil that has butter flavoring and additives mixed in. Butter doesn't really work well with popcorn. When it cools down it clumps together and makes the popcorn shrink and soggy. Despite the low input cost, movie theater popcorn costs more per ounce than Filet Mignon. The price of Popcorn is more than 1200% higher than its production costs. Also, according to a report about movie theater popcorn by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, “A medium-size buttered popcorn tub contains more fat than a breakfast of bacon and eggs, a Big Mac and fries, and a steak dinner combined." You don’t know this because though FDA requires chain restaurants and retailers to identify nutrition information on all food, movie theaters are exempt from this rule because they claim “[their] primary purpose is not to sell food.”

34Domestic Farming

Domestic Farming

People in the USA are concerned about overseas sweatshops, but they don’t know anything about domestic farming operations. Every single Jalapeño, Blackberries, etc. are hand-picked. This is literally back-breaking work. Farm workers are hunched over for hours. Every day hundreds of farm workers are injured in work-related accidents. Injuries in the sector are 20 percent higher than the private industry. The Justice Department has prosecuted seven cases of slavery since 1997, liberating over 1,000 farm workers from forced labor. Just 2% of farm workers belong to unions. Roughly half of U.S. farm workers are undocumented immigrants. Family income for 30% of all farm laborers falls below the federal poverty line.

35Farm Fishes

Farm Fishes

A good amount of fishes consumed for food are raised on aquafarms. Farmed fish spend their entire lives in crowded, filthy enclosures, and many suffer from parasitic infections, diseases, and debilitating injuries. Conditions on some farms are so horrendous that many fishes may die before farmers can kill and package them for food. Fishes that survive are commonly starved before they are sent to slaughter in order to reduce waste contamination of the water during transport. Salmon, for example, are starved for up to 10 full days. Also, fishes are most often gutted alive. Their head stays on, among other reasons, to be able to fully measure the fish to be sure it is of legal size.

  1. Shitty part is that none of this is a surprise. Just glad we only eat wild caught ocean fish and we have a blackberry bush in our backyard.
