15 Innocent Smells That Can Signal Serious Danger

11 Cilantro Smell Means Bed Bugs

Cilantro Smell Means Bed Bugs

If you notice a strange sweet, musty smell like cilantro or coriander near a hotel bed, treat it as a precaution and inspect the room carefully. Ohio State University notes that bedbugs can produce an offensive odor from their scent glands that some people describe as similar to coriander or cilantro, especially when an infestation is heavy. By the time that smell is obvious, the room may already have a significant number of bugs hiding in mattress seams, headboards, or nearby furniture. That is why travelers should check for live bugs, dark fecal spots, shed skins, and blood marks before settling in.

12 Fishy Odor Points to Infection

Fishy Odor Points to Infection

If your partner’s vagina suddenly has a strong fishy odor, treat it as a health warning rather than an embarrassment. NHS and Mayo Clinic guidance say that bacterial vaginosis often causes a thin discharge with a noticeable fishy smell, especially after sex, and many people do not realize they have it because other symptoms can be mild or absent. The condition is usually easy to diagnose and treat, but it should not be ignored because unusual genital odor can also overlap with other infections. The real danger is not the conversation. It is assuming the smell means nothing and delaying care.

13 Almond Smell Means Don’t Trust Your Nose

Almond Smell Means Don’t Trust Your Nose

If you notice a bitter almond smell around chemicals or smoke, treat it as a possible toxic warning, but never rely on that odor alone to keep you safe. CDC guidance says cyanide is sometimes described as having a bitter almond smell, yet it does not always give off a noticeable odor, and not everyone can smell it at all. ATSDR adds that the ability to detect that smell is genetically linked, with only about 60 to 70 percent of people able to notice it. That makes cyanide especially dangerous because a deadly exposure can happen even when the air seems normal.

14 Sharp Chlorine Smell

Sharp Chlorine Smell

If you catch a strong chlorine or sharp chemical smell near an ice rink, treat it as a warning and move away immediately. EPA guidance for ice rinks says ammonia refrigeration systems can leak and that staff should recognize ammonia’s pungent odor as a possible sign of a release, while EPA’s ice-arena air guidance also notes that fuel-fired resurfacers can foul rink air with carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide. An ammonia leak can burn the eyes, nose, and throat and, at higher concentrations, cause severe breathing problems and pulmonary edema. If you are downhill or in the path of a visible vapor cloud, get crosswind or upwind and farther away fast, then call emergency services.

15 Rotting Potatoes Mean Bad Air

Rotting Potatoes Mean Bad Air

If you open a cellar or confined storage space and get hit by the stench of rotting potatoes, do not go in casually. Safety guidance warns that stored potatoes release carbon dioxide, and in a sealed or poorly ventilated space that gas can build up, push out oxygen, and turn the air deadly even before you realize what is happening. That is why a foul potato smell in a basement, cellar, or storage room is more than just disgusting. In the wrong space, it can be a warning that the air itself is no longer safe to breathe.

  1. RE: Fact #15 (Rotting Potatoes Mean Bad Air) – Rotten potatoes are seriously the worst thing you’ll ever smell. If you have enough of them breaking down in a small room, it can actually kill you.

  2. RE: Fact #10 (Strange Smell Is a Seizure Warning) – I get a sterile, chlorine-like smell in my nose right before I faint or have a health episode. If you ever notice that, definitely find a place to lie down!

    • Those smells are often auras, which are early warning signs of a seizure. You really need to see a neurologist. Untreated seizures are dangerous. I used to get those smells and taste metallic stuff before having full-blown seizures. I’ve been on medication for 12 years now and life is much better.

      5
      • Sometimes people don’t realize an aura is actually a type of seizure itself. I get olfactory hallucinations during mine, though I can never recall what they were afterward.

    • I dealt with that constant smell for a long time and everyone thought I was nuts. It turns out I had spinal fluid leaking into my nose. I kept being told it was just allergies and migraines.

  3. RE: Fact #14 (Sharp Chlorine Smell) -One time I was at a driving range below an arena and saw this white fog creeping down the hill. It felt like the air was being pulled right out of my lungs. Get to high ground right away because you could easily suffocate. The crew had a massive leak, and the fire department told us we were lucky to get out of there when we did.

    • It bugs me that ammonia is such a perfect, affordable coolant for the planet, yet it’s way too poisonous to have in your house. Even the amount used in a normal fridge is a major health hazard if the lines burst.

  4. RE: Fact #7 (When the Air Smells Like Ozone) – I once smelled ozone in my backyard, heard a hiss, and then KABOOM. Lightning hit an apple tree nearby. It was terrifying how my brain processed the smell, the flash, and the crackle all in a split second.

    6
    • I actually stared right into a strike once. It started storming, my hair stood up, and then a bolt hit the ground barely a meter away. My ears ached, my legs felt weird, and I had a brutal headache for days. My depth perception was totally off afterward and my nose got a light burn from the heat. It felt like I was floating in warm liquid.

      4
      • Sounds like you had a concussion. Please be careful because they tend to get easier to sustain over time. It can really mess with your senses, making things like reading or watching TV pretty painful.

        4
      • That is wild. I’ve never seen a real account of what being that close to lightning feels like. Your description is seriously impressive.

    • I was playing video games once when a strike hit a tree maybe 30 meters away in a ditch. The flash and noise were so intense I swore it had hit our front door.

      3
      • Lightning hit a tree right outside my room once. The weirdest part was that I actually dreamt of an explosion seconds before the real one hit.

        1
    • Is it always super intense? I went to leave a sample at the doctor’s office, but when I walked back into the bathroom after another lady left, I nearly puked. I told the next person it wasn’t me, and she seemed skeptical until she smelled it herself.

    • My sugar hit 162 so I have a doctor’s visit Monday. Thanks for this fact! I woke up the other night and my pee smelled so bad it actually startled my son awake. I’m waiting on a glucose monitor from Amazon to keep an eye on things until my appointment.

  5. RE: Fact #2 (When Cat Pee Signals Chemical Danger) – I checked out a rental once that reeked of it, so I passed. I felt awful for ten days after. My doctor eventually brought in security because it turns out cooking meth smells exactly like cat urine. I’d inhaled some nasty fumes. The cops checked the place, confirmed the residue, and they had to quarantine the whole building.

    • Meth fumes are nasty. I grew up in a rough neighborhood where a cook house across from my school kept exploding, getting fixed, and blowing up again.

      7
    • Exactly! It’s unmistakable. Working in the ER, I deal with that cat pee odor a lot. Smoking the stuff creates a sweet smell that just sticks to every surface. We see kids who come in smelling like it, which is a huge red flag for exposure.

      • I visited a friend who struggled with drug use and her place had this ‘wrong’ cat pee smell. It made me flinch like inhaling car exhaust. It had this syrupy sweetness that actually clung to my sweatshirt for a week. Is that residue always that sickly sweet, like brown sugar?

      • Someone in my building is doing something that smells like a weird, burnt sugar. It gives me terrible migraines that leave me bedridden. My landlord keeps claiming it is just cooking, but that makes no sense. I’ve never had issues with strong food smells like durian or fermented shrimp, but this stuff is different. I’ve wondered if it could be meth after reading these comments.

  6. RE: Fact #3 (Musky Smell Can Mean Bear Country) – Male bears sometimes smell like a mix of coffee grounds and a petting zoo.

    5
    • Talking about animal scents, I thought people were lying about maned wolf urine smelling like weed. I checked it out at the zoo, and it definitely does.
