American World War II general George S. Patton believed in reincarnation and claimed that he had fought in wars for thousands of years. He believed his past lives included a Roman legionary under Julius Caesar, an English knight in the Hundred Years' War, and a French marshal under Napoleon. During World War I in France, Patton wrote to his mother that a Roman road felt familiar and wondered whether he had once led a legion along it or stormed a nearby chateau during the Middle Ages. He summarized his belief in a poem: "I fought in many guises, many names, but always me."
