More than 130 years after French engineer Gustave Eiffel completed the Eiffel Tower for Paris's 1889 International Exposition, accumulated paint has made it about 700 metric tons heavier than when it was built. Workers have repainted its ironwork 19 times, applying about 60 metric tons during each cycle while erosion removes only 15 to 20 metric tons.
