Humans Sleep Least Among Primates

Among every primate species studied so far, humans get the least sleep, averaging less than seven hours per night. A model based on human body size, brain size, and diet predicted that people should sleep about 9.5 hours, roughly as long as chimpanzees. Humans also spend a larger share of their sleep in REM, suggesting that our species evolved shorter but more efficient sleep.
