Nearly 2,000-year-old graffiti discovered across the ancient city of Pompeii preserved the ordinary thoughts of its residents. Someone at the gladiator barracks recorded the simple achievement, "On April 19th, I made bread." In the atrium of the House of Pinarius, another resident boasted about his partner by writing, "If anyone does not believe in Venus, they should gaze at my girlfriend."
