Alexandria Library Confiscated Visiting Books

According to Greek medical writer Galen, Egyptian king Ptolemy II decreed that every ship visiting ancient Alexandria had to surrender any books found aboard. Official scribes took the texts to the Library of Alexandria and copied them. The library kept the originals and returned the copies to their owners.
