During Super Bowl XXVI on January 26, 1992, Fox aired a live halftime special of the American sketch comedy series In Living Color against CBS's traditional themed show. The counterprogramming attracted an estimated 20 million to 25 million viewers and caused the Super Bowl broadcast's audience to fall sharply during halftime. The ratings loss helped push the NFL toward major celebrity performers, beginning with American pop singer Michael Jackson at Super Bowl XXVII in 1993.
