In the late 1990s, the declining F. W. Woolworth Company shifted its focus from its traditional five-and-dime stores to its profitable specialty footwear businesses. The corporation renamed itself Venator while Foot Locker became its strongest-performing retail chain. In 2001, the company completed the transformation by changing its corporate name to Foot Locker.
