From the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, many IBM-compatible PCs included a "Turbo" button that switched between full processor speed and a slower compatibility mode. Older programs often tied their timing directly to the processor, so faster computers could make games run too quickly to play properly. Disengaging Turbo mode slowed the machine to a speed closer to early 8086 and 8088 computers, allowing those programs to work as intended.
