In 2011, a jailed man named Anthony Brown helped the FBI investigate corruption and brutality inside the Los Angeles County jail system. After sheriff’s officials discovered he was an informant, deputies moved him between facilities, held him under false names, isolated him, and watched him around the clock to keep FBI handlers from finding him. The wider corruption probe included allegations of deputy brutality, illegal obstruction, and staged “gladiator-style” fights between inmates. Federal prosecutors later charged several officials from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in the obstruction case.
