Crosswalk Buttons Became Placebo Controls

Many major cities have disabled thousands of crosswalk buttons but keep them installed anyway because removing them costs too much. In New York City, only about 100 of roughly 1,000 crosswalk buttons reportedly still work. The rest remained in place as “placebo buttons,” giving pedestrians the feeling that they could speed up the signal even though the traffic lights ran on automated timers.
