Melamine Formula Scandal Hit Infants

In 2008, Chinese authorities faced a growing crisis after baby formula contaminated with melamine sickened tens of thousands of infants. Reports later revealed that complaints about the tainted formula had surfaced before the Beijing Olympics, but the scandal was not publicly disclosed until after the Games had ended. By then, about 54,000 babies had been hospitalized, and at least six had died from illnesses linked to the contaminated milk products.
