American pediatrician Benjamin Spock transformed child-rearing with his 1946 book Baby and Child Care, which became one of the best-selling books of the twentieth century. At a time when many experts encouraged strict, detached parenting, Spock advised mothers and fathers to show affection to their children and treat them as individuals.
