Aphids are among the most destructive agricultural pests in the world, largely because of their extraordinary reproductive abilities. Many aphid species can reproduce asexually through live birth, allowing females to produce offspring without mating. Their gestation period can be as short as about a week, and they also exhibit "telescoping generations," in which developing nymphs already contain embryos of the next generation.
