Mount Erebus Erupts Gold Dust

Mount Erebus Erupts Gold Dust

Mount Erebus, an active volcano in Antarctica, releases tiny crystals of gold into the atmosphere every day. Scientists studying the volcano discovered that gases rising from its persistent lava lake carry microscopic particles of crystallized gold into the air. The wind can carry these extremely small particles, which measure less than a fraction of a millimeter, for hundreds of miles. Researchers estimate that Mount Erebus ejects enough gold each day to be worth thousands of dollars.
