In 1891, the U.S. government ruled that cities ending in "-burgh" should drop the final "h," turning Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, into "Pittsburg" in federal usage. Local officials and residents resisted the change and continued using the traditional spelling with the "h." For 20 years, federal institutions used "Pittsburg" while the city kept writing "Pittsburgh." In 1911, after political pressure, the U.S. government officially restored the Pittsburgh spelling.
