British developmental biologist John Gurdon ranked last out of 250 boys in biology at school, and his teacher wrote that a career in science would be "a waste of time, both for him and for those who have to teach him." Gurdon kept going anyway and built a career around cell development and cloning research. In 2012, he won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
