The Royal Society admired English physicist Isaac Newton’s “Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica,” but the UK science academy could not afford to publish it. The society had nearly bankrupted itself printing “The History of Fish,” an expensive book that sold poorly. English astronomer Edmond Halley then stepped in and personally funded Newton’s book.
