American chemist and psychopharmacologist Alexander Shulgin created nearly 250 psychedelic compounds over roughly 50 years. He tested psychoactive chemicals himself, developed the Shulgin Rating Scale to describe their effects, and later documented many of them with his wife Ann Shulgin. Their books, “PiHKAL” and "TiHKAL," recorded the chemistry and reported experiences behind many of those substances.
