Neither of the men behind "Rich Dad Poor Dad" was actually poor. "Poor Dad" was based on American businessman and author Robert Kiyosaki’s father, Ralph Kiyosaki, who served as Hawaii’s top education official. "Rich Dad" was based on Hawaiian hotel and real estate businessman Richard Kimi.
