Minnesota Infantry’s Gettysburg Sacrifice

The 1st Minnesota Infantry lost 82% of its fighting strength on July 2, 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg. Union General Winfield Scott Hancock ordered the regiment to charge a much larger Confederate force so the Union line could buy time and regroup. Of the 262 men who charged, 215 were killed, wounded, or missing within minutes.
