American firefighter Donald Herbert fell into a coma after a firefighting accident deprived him of oxygen and left him badly injured. He woke a year later unable to recognize friends or family, then slipped into a minimally conscious state that lasted more than 9 years. In 2005, he suddenly became responsive again, and one of his first questions was about his wife.
