American president Harry S. Truman stayed heavily involved with his presidential library after it opened in Independence, Missouri, in 1957. He worked there 5 or 6 days a week, personally trained staff, and turned visits from schoolchildren into impromptu press conferences. He even answered the telephone and gave directions, treating the library less like a monument and more like a working extension of his public life.
