White dwarf stars will eventually cool until they become “black dwarfs,” but none exist yet because the universe has not been around long enough. A white dwarf is the hot, dense core left behind after a Sun-like star runs out of fuel and sheds its outer layers, packing a star’s mass into an Earth-sized remnant that slowly radiates heat into space.
