Silphium Lost Plant Mystery

Silphium Lost Plant Mystery

Silphium was an ancient plant from Cyrenaica, in what is now Libya, that Greeks and Romans prized as medicine, seasoning, perfume, an aphrodisiac, and a possible contraceptive or abortifacient. Roman cooks valued its resin so highly that they used a product called "laser," and ancient writers treated it as one of the most desirable ingredients in the Mediterranean world. But the plant’s exact identity is still debated, as it was harvested to extinction. Modern researchers still argue over whether a surviving relative, such as Ferula drudeana, could be connected to it, but its true fate remains unsolved.
