Cockroach Low-Light Vision Mystery

Cockroach Low-Light Vision Mystery

Cockroaches can keep navigating in light so dim that each photoreceptor may receive only about one photon every 10 seconds, which is below what most visual systems can use reliably. The leading idea is that cockroaches pool tiny light signals over time and across many photoreceptors, almost like building a long-exposure image. But the full neural mechanism that lets them turn such absurdly weak input into useful vision is still not completely understood.
