In July 1980, around 300 children and other attendees at the Hollinwell Showground in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, suddenly developed fainting, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and sore eyes and throats. The incident began during a junior marching-band event, and the sickness spread so fast that 259 people were taken to nearby hospitals, with several children kept overnight. Investigators considered contaminated water, food poisoning, crop spraying, pesticides, and other possibilities, while the official inquiry leaned toward mass hysteria. But no explanation ever fully satisfied everyone involved, and the exact cause has never been definitively settled.
