In 1939, Batman hit the stands just as a pulp hero called the Black Bat, who showed up in Thrilling Publications’ magazines wearing a look close enough to spark copycat accusations on both sides. The feud got serious enough that both companies talked lawsuits until DC editor Whitney Ellsworth, who had previously worked for the Black Bat’s publisher, brokered a deal. The Black Bat wouldn't appear in comics, and in exchange, Batman wouldn't appear in pulp magazines.
