In the early 1970s, Marvel’s writers wanted to kill Gwen Stacy, but Stan Lee did not grasp the decision when they raised it as he rushed out to catch a flight to a meeting in Europe. Wanting to clear the office quickly, he waved them on with a casual approval, only to leave without realizing he had just signed off on one of Spider-Man’s biggest tragedies. When Lee returned, Gwen was dead in the comics, and the story had already become permanent.
