In Early Cretaceous China, a stocky mammal called Repenomamus robustus ate part of a young Psittacosaurus, and the proof ended up inside the fossil itself. Paleontologists found dinosaur remains preserved in the mammal’s stomach, showing that at least some Mesozoic mammals did more than hide from dinosaurs in the undergrowth. That discovery overturned the old image of all early mammals as tiny, helpless creatures living entirely in the shadow of giant reptiles.
