About 125 million years ago in what is now northeastern China, a cat-sized mammal called Repenomamus robustus attacked a beaked dinosaur named Psittacosaurus lujiatunensis. The fossil shows the mammal biting into the dinosaur’s rib area while clinging to it with its limbs, which led researchers to argue that this was an active attack, not simple scavenging. Before the fight could end, a sudden volcanic debris flow of ash and mud buried both animals together and preserved the struggle in stone.
