In August 2016, American singer Frank Ocean released Endless as a streaming-only visual album on Apple Music through Def Jam, and the project fulfilled his contract with the label. The very next day, he released Blonde as his second studio album under his own label, Boys Don’t Cry, instead of through Def Jam. That move became one of the most talked-about label maneuvers in modern music because it appeared to let him walk away with Blonde on his own terms.
