1917 Medal Of Honor Purge

In 1917, the U.S. Army’s Medal of Honor Review Board revoked 911 previously awarded Medals of Honor after raising the standards required for the decoration. Many of the rescinded medals had been granted during the American Civil War, often for actions such as reenlisting rather than for extraordinary combat heroism. Only a small number of the revoked medals were later restored.
