Prussian officer Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, who trained the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, lived as a lifelong bachelor. He eventually left all his property to three young men he had formally adopted. When he traveled to America to help the revolutionaries, he was accompanied by his young secretary and his beloved dog, which he reportedly took with him everywhere.
