In 2023, officials reviewing calls to the Massachusetts Problem Gambling Helpline discovered that more than one-third of callers were not seeking help for addiction at all. Many people contacted the hotline because they were having technical problems with their online betting apps. These callers mistakenly believed the state helpline could provide customer support or IT assistance for the apps.
