In Alaska, a person who shoots a bear in self-defense outside the official hunting season must still follow strict state rules. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game requires the shooter to salvage the entire hide with the claws attached and the skull of the animal. They must then present these parts to state authorities and file a Defense of Life or Property report. Failing to do so is treated as a criminal offense under Alaska wildlife law.
