Polish author Krystian Bala became a suspect in the 2000 murder of businessman Dariusz Janiszewski in Poland after police read his novel Amok, published in 2003. Detectives noticed the book described a murder with details strikingly similar to the real case, including facts that had never been publicly released. Investigators linked Bala to the victim through phone records and evidence showing he had sold the victim’s mobile phone online after the killing. In 2007, a Polish court convicted the writer, who had effectively described his own crime in fiction, and sentenced the serial killer–obsessed author to 25 years in prison.
