Serial killer David Berkowitz, known as the “Son of Sam,” murdered six people and wounded seven others in New York City during 1976 and 1977 before police arrested him and sentenced him to life in prison. Decades later, during the 2002 Washington, D.C., sniper attacks, Berkowitz wrote a letter responding to the shootings. In the message, he urged the attackers to “stop hurting innocent people.”
