Serial killer John Wayne Gacy, who murdered at least 33 young men and boys between 1972 and 1978 in Illinois, maintained an active public life in his community. Gacy volunteered in local civic organizations, hosted neighborhood events, and performed as a clown named “Pogo” at parties and charity functions. Because of his involvement in community activities, he attended a 1978 event in Chicago where he met and was photographed with First Lady Rosalynn Carter. The Secret Service even granted the serial killer temporary security clearance for the event before authorities uncovered his crimes later that year.
