Israel Keyes, an American serial killer from Utah, carried out a series of murders across the United States between 2001 and 2012 while living for years in Anchorage, Alaska. Unlike many offenders, he avoided patterns by choosing different victim types and refusing to kill in the same area twice. In one case, he flew to Chicago, rented a car, and drove to Vermont to retrieve a murder kit he had buried two years earlier, then carried out the crime while paying only in cash and keeping his phone turned off. Investigators eventually connected him to the 2012 abduction and murder of Samantha Koenig in Anchorage, which led to his arrest in Texas. Authorities later confirmed three murders, though Keyes admitted to several others before the serial killer died by suicide in jail in 2012 while awaiting trial.
