Kenshin Sends Salt To Shingen

During Japan’s Sengoku period, the Echigo warlord Uesugi Kenshin learned that his rival Takeda Shingen had suffered a salt embargo when the Hōjō clan cut off Shingen’s supplies. Instead of exploiting the shortage, Kenshin ordered salt shipped from his own coastal domains to Takeda territory. He reportedly declared, “I do not fight with salt, but with the sword.”
