In October 2017, as wildfires swept through Sonoma County in California, Roland Hendel and his family evacuated their hilltop home, but their Great Pyrenees dog, Odin, refused to leave the eight goats he watched over. When the family returned days later, they found the property burned and structures destroyed, but Odin was alive, singed and limping, still guarding the entire flock of goats along with several deer that had joined them. His owners later set up a fund to help rebuild the animals’ shelter and care.
