Cast Away’s Studio-Made Island Sound

In Cast Away, none of the sound in the island scenes is real, even though the crew filmed on an actual uninhabited island. The loud ocean waves on location were so overwhelming that they drowned out every other noise. As a result, the sound team rerecorded every island and ocean sound, including Tom Hanks’ monologues, in a studio.
