Norwegian Nobel laureate Knut Hamsun gave his Nobel Prize to Joseph Goebbels in a bid to secure an audience with Hitler and ask for Norwegian prisoners to be released. He offered the medal as a personal gesture, hoping that this sacrifice would persuade Hitler to free his countrymen. Instead, the meeting only angered Hitler.
