Christopher Columbus made significant errors when he estimated the distance from Europe to Asia, assuming the voyage would be far shorter than it actually was. He set out expecting to reach Japan with the food and supplies he carried, but his calculations ignored how vast the ocean really is. If the Americas had not been in his path, his ships would have run out of provisions long before reaching Asia and doomed the expedition.
